‘God Frees’: Why Comedian JP Sears Changed His Mind About God
By Movieguide® Contributor
In an early 2023 video titled “I Changed My Mind About God – Here’s Why,” comedian and YouTuber JP Sears shares how he “accidentally” became a believer.
In the past, “I became very inundated in the spiritual movement. So like spirituality, not religion. Like the evolve thinkers [who] are spiritual, not religious…That was me,” he shared. “…But when I look back, I can see I was excluding some amazing traditional Christian values, beliefs of God, and ways of connecting with God that I now really value.”
God TV reported, “It was actually the evident presence of evil in the past years that changed him.”
As Sears began to recognize evil, he started to turn away from it. As he turned away, he moved to the opposite of evil—God. And thus, he “accidentally” became a Christian.
“As [evil becomes] more obvious, I think there’s a natural polarity that happens. If you’re not someone who’s willing to do the devil’s bidding, if you’re not someone who’s willing to propagate evil, then there’s a natural occurrence that happens,” Sears said.
“When you’re in the presence of evil, you polarize to the other extreme,” he continued. “You may not even be consciously aware of it, but the presence of evil makes you lean away.”
The comedian claims that many people he knows have had the same experience. He believes this is due to the increasing evil in the world.
He realized “God’s way is freedom. Evil constricts. God Frees. God gives us free will. That’s our expression of freedom; that’s God’s way.”
“I’m delighted to say now I have not only no shame about saying ‘God,’ but I actually have joy in saying ‘God,'” the comedian said.
Charisma News pointed out that with Sears’ video, he “is certainly making an impact. In addition to having more than 2.82 million subscribers on YouTube, he also has 1.1 million followers on Instagram, more than 342,000 followers on Twitter and more than 3 million followers on Facebook.”
Later in the video, Sears shared what he believes is one of the most vital things Christians can do—pray.
“I now believe that the power of prayer is the most important thing you and I can do. I believe prayer is powerful. I believe prayer brings about change. I believe prayer brings God into a place where God is needed,” he said.
Movieguide® also reported how fellow comedian Michael Jr.’s comedy changed after he became a believer:
“After meeting Jesus, my goals changed,” Micheal Jr. said. “I’m always asking, ‘What can I give to this audience right now?’”
“When people laugh, their hearts open,” Michael Jr. added, “and when your heart is open, I want to make a deposit into it that could make a positive change and help you to discover your God-given purpose.”
