God Restores When Trials and Tribulations Come Upon You

I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you.

-Joel 2:25

In Westwood, California, in the 1980s, my rental car was robbed with my luggage and the irreplaceable Protestant Film Office pictures and files. So, I prayed.

The next day, I called my wife Lili at our home at that time in Atlanta and asked her to listen to the phone messages. This was in the days before cell phones. She did, and a Hollywood cameraman had left a taped message that he had found my luggage in a dumpster near where I was parked when the car was robbed.

I drove over to collect my bags and got to witness to the Hollywood cameraman about the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

Years later, God repeated the miracle.

My wife Lili, daughter Evy and I were staying at C.S. Lewis’ Oxford home, the Kilns (which was a miracle itself), while I was writing a book on C.S. Lewis called NARNIA BECKONS. When I attended a faculty dinner at Oxford in my doctoral robes, our rental car was robbed. We went to the police station to fill out reports and were told that Oxford was a high crime area, and so there was nothing they could do.

That night, I stretched out in prayer on the floor until God told me the bags would be returned.

The next day a trash collector called, miraculously, and said he had found the bags. Everything was intact. God answers prayer. Better yet, I got to witness to the trash collector.
