Here’s How God Is Working at the Paris Olympics
By Movieguide® Contributor
The summer Olympics in Paris have been headlining for its negative and perverse portrayal of “The Last Supper,” but God is still at work at the Games.
CBN reported how some athletes are using the event “to glorify God.”
One such person is 26-year-old Daniel Roberts of Georgia who holds a spot running the 110-meter hurdles for Team USA.
“We’re all here to worship God in our own special way,” he said. “This is just a different way that I use my abilities and my gifts to bring glory to Him.”
Another group called Athletes in Action are bringing chaplains to the Olympic athletes. CBN reported, “Volunteers will be praying for ‘divine appointments’ to guide their time in the French capital.”
“They’re bold in what they do,” Frank Shelton, a volunteer with the ministry, explained, referring to athletes who share their faith publicly. “And we need to be bold in sharing the gospel. I just don’t believe that we should be saints sitting on the sideline. We got to get in the game. Christianity isn’t a spectator sport.”
The French Bible Society is handing out 200k Bibles in Paris. Movieguide® reported:
As the world converges on Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games, the French Bible Society is hoping to make a lasting impact on visitors’ lives as it hands out 200,000 free copies of the New Testament.
Playing off the Olympics’ focus on the gold medal, the special edition of the New Testament is named “More Precious than Gold”— inspired by 1 Peter 1:7…
Along with the entire New Testament, the Bibles handed out will include the testimonies of French handball champion Joël Abati and Australian high jumper Nicola Olyslagers, both of whom will be competing this summer.
“There are a lot of synergies between being an athlete on whatever sport, discipline you choose,” 2008 Olympic Bronze medalist Marylin Okoro said. “I didn’t win every race, but [God] allowed that because it was going to teach me something. And my job was to not give up…Faith is like a muscle and sometimes it’s super strong and sometimes it’s weak and needs sharpening.”
Youth With a Mission is also sharing the love of Jesus with people at the Olympics. A three-week mission includes meetings, worship, and outreaches to touch people’s lives. In an Instagram post, the group shared clips of this past week’s events. “POV: Every nation is in one city and you get to share Jesus with them during the Olympics,” the caption reads.
Despite the darkness that has perverted this year’s opening ceremony, God’s light is shining through and touching people’s lives even still. John 1:5 reminds us, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
