HGTV Star Calls for Help for Hurricane Victims, Volunteers

A place very special to HGTV star Jenny Marrs is facing severe damage after Hurricane Helene.

“If I were asked to choose one place that evokes feelings of nostalgia – in particular warmth and safety – I would choose Beech Mountain, North Carolina. My childhood memories are inextricably tied to this quaint ski town tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina,” Marrs shared with childhood photos of herself and family over the years in Beech Mountain.

“There, my siblings and I would set out to explore imaginative lands in the forest for hours each day. We’d play board games in the evenings and read books before bed. We’d hike the endless trails off the Blue Ridge Parkway and eat picnic lunches perched on a boulder while we dipped our feet in picturesque streams,” she continued.

The Florida family would leave for one week every winter to visit the ski town.

“This past week, as we all have watched the devastation in the wake of Hurricane Helene’s fury in that exceedingly beautiful part of our country, I’ve felt heartbroken, helpless and grief-stricken. Yet, the stories of Hope remain. I’ve collected a list of resources on the ground serving the people most in need and have linked to my full post in my profile as well as in my stories.”

“I know the needs feel overwhelming to all of us watching from afar, but, I also know that every one of us can make a difference. One of my favorite of Mother Teresa’s quotes is, ‘If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.’ I love this reminder that helping one person is just as important as helping many, and that every action has an impact.”

She urged her followers to not limit their impact by their thinking, as no gift is too small.

“Let’s do what we can with what we have and trust God to multiply our generosity and use it to impact lives,” she said.

She lists four organizations that she encourages people to donate to: Cajun Navy Relief, Mercy Chefs, Convoy of Hope and Samaritan’s Purse.

Marrs’ fellow HGTV star, Ben Napier, also revealed his connection to North Carolina and urged support for hurricane victims last week. Movieguide® reported:

If you’re looking for places to give for #helenerelief, check my stories,” the star wrote.

Growing up, the Smokies of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee were heaven for my brothers and me. The first vacation I can remember was to this part of our great country. I went to church camp at @lakejunaluska every summer, and continued as a youth minister. This place is a part of mine and @erinapier’s love story. If you’re looking for ways to give, I’ve setup several links in my stories. These people are all helping with efforts in the area. #HurricaneHelene#WesternNC#smokies

The Hurricane has ravaged much of the Southeast of the United States.

“At least 120 people were killed as Helene traveled northwards from the Gulf Coast, The Associated Press reported Monday. The storm made landfall Thursday night as a Category 4 hurricane in Florida’s Big Bend region with sustained winds of 140 mph,” ABC News reported.

On her Instagram story on Oct. 6, Marrs shared her concerns for hurricane Milton, which has risen along the southern coasts. It’s labeled category 4 and is headed for Florida in the next few days. Seven million Floridians have been asked to evacuate their homes.

“My family is all in Florida and are bracing for this next one. Praying the predictions are wrong and praying for everyone in the path of Milton,” Marrs wrote.
