How Phillies Pitcher Spencer Turnbull Leans on God

Phillies pitcher Spencer Turnbull was drafted in the second round of the 2014 MLB draft and continues to give God the glory for his success.
He first played for the FCL Tigers and the Connecticut Tigers, both minor league teams. But after four years in the minor leagues, Turnbull was called up to the majors, where he played four games. He’s improved every year since and plans to make the 2024 season his best yet.
Throughout his success, though, Turnbull relies on his relationship with God.
His Instagram bio includes Ephesians 3:20, which reads, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”
Turnball previously pitched for the Detroit Tigers.
He gave God the glory after throwing the eighth no-hitter in the Tigers’ franchise history in May 2021.
“The only thing I have left to say is just all glory to God,” Turnbull expressed. “I really feel like His presence was in me all night.”
“Honestly, warming up in the bullpen, I felt horrible,” he admitted. “My mechanics were not clicking at all. I was like, ‘All right, this is gonna be a mentality day. We’re just gonna have to fake it until I make it today.’”
Turnbull knew there was only one thing he could do: pray.
“I just said a quick little prayer and was just like, ‘All right, we’re gonna go for it,’” he revealed. “Whatever I’ve got today is what I’ve got.’”
The athlete uses his social media platform to talk about his faith and his relationship with his wife, Ashley.
In a birthday post dedicated to his wife, Turnbull wrote, “You’re one of the most selfless and generous people I know and your heart is pure gold! Thank you so much for everything you do and have given up to love and serve me, Ryser and so many others. I love doing life with you, you are a treasure that I don’t deserve. You bring the fun everywhere you go, your smile lights up every room and still melts me to this day! I believe this next year will be the year that brings the fulfillment of God’s promises to you that you’ve so patiently waited for.”
