While at YouTube’s 20th anniversary celebration, CEO Neal Mohan touted a major milestone: YouTube Shorts now receive over 200 billion average daily views.

“Today, I’m excited to share a new milestone: YouTube Shorts are now averaging over 200 billion daily views,” Mohan said, adding, “at Youtube, we’re seeing a huge uptick in the amount of people creating – and watching – Shorts.”

The announcement of this milestone comes after Mohan shared in May that the platform would be upping its revenue distribution for Shorts to match that of full-length YouTube videos. At that time, he revealed that the number of YouTube Shorts hitting the platform was up 20% from the first quarter of 2024 and that 70% of all YouTube channels now upload Shorts.

“It’s something that we have been working on for a while and it’s a testament to both the viewer side, but also the quality of ad products that we build for our advertisers,” Mohan said about the increased revenue split.

As YouTube continues to expand from phones and computers to TV screens, surprisingly, Shorts have followed suit as they average over 1 billion views on TVs every day.

“For more and more people, watching TV means watching YouTube. Viewers are watching, on average, over 1 billion hours of YouTube content on TVs daily, and TV is now the primary device for YouTube viewing in the U.S.,” Mohan wrote in a February blog post. “But the ‘new’ television doesn’t look like the ‘old’ television. It’s interactive and includes things like Shorts, podcasts and live streams, right alongside the sports, sitcoms and talk shows people already love.”

As YouTube continues to eat up a larger share of the entertainment industry, it has also worked on tools to enable its creators to produce content more easily. Perhaps the most groundbreaking tool that is on the horizon is its AI model Veo 3, which uses Google Deepmind to generate video and audio.

“We’re put this model into the hands of creators with Dream Screen. Last month, Google announced the newest model: Veo 3, which vastly improves video quality and incorporates audio,” Mohan said. “Today, I’m proud to share that Veo 3 will be coming to YouTube Shorts later this summer. I believe these tools will open new creative lanes for everyone to explore.”

Mohan also revealed that YouTube is working to incorporate AI into language translation tools so creators can have their work automatically translated into the most popular languages worldwide.

YouTube reigns as the most popular entertainment source for a reason. Whether it is Hollywood or TikTok, the platform has proven to be a formidable opponent, difficult to stave off. Despite launching Shorts at the end of 2020, in less than five years, YouTube has become a major hub for short-form content.
