Moviemaker Jon Erwin believes the Psalms are so valuable for the Christian life because they include the full range of human emotions and reveal how these emotions fit into a relationship with the Lord.
“My great hope is that if you haven’t read the Bible in a while, or maybe if you’ve not read it ever, of course, start with the Gospel of John. But secondarily to that, if you want to just relate to whatever you’re going through in life that’s hard, read the Psalms of David,” Erwin told Pastor Greg Laurie. “Only about 15% of those Psalms are, ‘Praise God, my life is great.’ [Instead,] most of the Psalms are like, ‘I need to repent from huge mistakes that I’ve made.’ I’m depressed. I’m angry. I’m afraid. The range of the human experience is written in the Psalms of David.

“And these were written by a king who did not have to be this honest. You know, the Psalms, they were like David’s diary in many ways, and they’re very honest and very autobiographical,” Laurie noted, adding insight. “The Bible says that he was a man after God’s own heart and what a unique description. The way he came back was always because his highs were as high as his lows. But the way in which he came back to God are the songs we still sing.”
While David’s story is already one of the more accessible parts of the Bible, Erwin made the biblical king’s story even more approachable in recent years through HOUSE OF DAVID. The show takes the story of David and makes it into a biblically-accurate portrayal with a script that is interesting for modern day audiences — whether or not they are a Christian.
The show has found extreme success, with the first season landing the No. 1 spot on Prime Video’s catalog of shows while it was being released. The second season was the launching point of Wonder Project’s streaming service.
“The goal of what we do is to get people to say, ‘Is that in the Bible?’…and to draw people back to the book,” Erwin explained. “It’s like these shows, hopefully in their purest form of gigantic billboards say, ‘Go to the sword.’ I love that.”
HOUSE OF DAVID helps lead the charge in bringing Christian values back to Hollywood. Since the end of the pandemic — and the success of THE CHOSEN — America has been seeking wholesome, Christian values as a whole. Americans have found these values through a variety of high-quality Christian content that continues to find success that Hollywood can’t ignore.
