Jonathan Roumie says the experience of shooting Season 6 of THE CHOSEN “still affects” him today.

“For what we did with Season 6, it’s going to be pretty shocking for a lot of people — just to experience, after five seasons of seeing Jesus [as] your friend, your teacher, your healer, your rabbi, your minister — once he’s in custody, the tone changes, and it’s going to be pretty tough for a lot of people,” he said during an episode of “The Lila Rose Show.”

Roumie added, “For all of us that filmed it, it was the hardest thing we’ve ever done, especially for myself.”

“Any time you put yourself in a set of circumstances where mentally, psychologically, and emotionally, you are trying to convince yourself that something is true, your brain doesn’t know the difference,” he explained.

The actor continued, “It still affects me now, and I’m dealing with my own sort of PTSD from the experience of reenacting the scourging and the crucifixion, but it was all in service to the Lord and for Him to use it for His benefit and His glory, not any of ours,” he said.

Roumie has been open about the toll shooting Season 6 of THE CHOSEN has taken on him.

“It’s been the most difficult thing we’ve ever done. And for many of us as actors, it was the most challenging work that we’ve ever had to do,” he told USA Today. “For many of us, spiritually and emotionally, it was excruciating; it was brutal.”

Roumie explained, “For me, it’s an entering into Christ’s suffering in a way that has to go far enough for me personally to be believably authentic to an audience. So there’s a certain amount of communion in that suffering that I end up experiencing, because that’s the only way to do this job…It’s not something I would ever want to shoot again.”

“Beyond the image of it, you have five and a half seasons of getting to know this character in a completely different context and loving these characters and then seeing him and then his friends,” he continued. “Everyone suffers in Season 6. Nobody’s exempt, and it’s just going to be devastating.”

In a 2025 Instagram post, Roumie told followers, “This month, I’m filming one of the most sacred, painful, and defining moments in all of human history: the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. I’d be lying if I said it’s ‘business as usual’. Or easy. Or ‘fun scenes to film’. It’s not. It’s heavy. It’s humbling. And it’s holy.”

THE CHOSEN Season 6 is expected to premiere some time this fall.
