SHIFTING GEARS Season 2 ended with a bang, and the high ratings may lead up to a third season.

The show is about Matt (Tim Allen), a widower and car restoration expert whose estranged daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), and her two kids pop into his life unexpectedly. They comedically restore their relationship and mend the holes in each other’s lives.

On the Feb. 4 finale, Matt and his daughter each give love a try. The last-minute ends with two guys literally knocking on Riley’s door, to her surprise. Meanwhile, Matt drops everything to go to Japan with his ex, Eve, TV Insider reported.

The finale helped Season 2 earn a total view time of 6.9 million viewers and a 0.99 rating among adults under 50. It jumped by 59% among total viewers and 154% among adults under 50 for its same day audience.

These are the best ratings the Tim Allen-lead comedy has ever had.

Showrunner Michelle Nader said she’d love to fill out as many episodes as she’s given.

“I really left behind any fixed expectations a long time ago,” she said about series’ lengths.

“I truly mean this: As many [episodes] as they give us, I’ll fill them to the brim,” she emphasized. “If it’s 10, if it’s 13, if it’s 22 — that’s great.”

“The new normal is shorter orders, so I try to pack as much as possible into every episode because you just don’t know how many you’ll get. It does help to know the number up front so I can plan the season,” she said.

One of the show’s stars, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, who plays Stitch, said he was told to “leave his stuff in the dressing room,” meaning that there is likely to be a Season 3.

Mitchell previously spoke of his enthusiasm for Season 2 which starred Dennings, Jenna Elfman and Nancy Travis: “We’re thoroughbreds, man. We’ve been doing this. And everybody here is not jaded, and everybody is, I don’t know, it’s just a newfound energy on the stage.”

Part of Movieguide®’s review of SHIFTING GEARS Season 1 Episode 4 reads, “The episode teaches strong biblical values, emphasizing family and how it can help us heal and grow. Furthermore, multiple scenes prominently feature a cross in the background. However, there is mild foul language and one reference to false religion; thus, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and teens.”

We still await an official renewal confirmation, but hopefully we won’t have to wait to long as spring is just around the corner.
