How Trump Assassination Attempt Inspired Country Singer to ‘Stand’

Anne Wilson explained how the attempted assassination attempt on Donald Trump in July inspired her song “Stand,” which she released in September.
“I wanted to write a song about standing up for the things that I believe in,” Wilson told Crosswalk Headlines. “When former President Trump was shot, it was a big awakening for me. Like, I can’t believe that people are standing for this kind of thing — regardless of what political side you’re on.
The lyrics call for listeners to “stand, stand your ground / say, ‘I won’t back down’ / even when the whole world’s against me / I’m standing strong ‘cause I know who’s with me. / brave in the face of fear / let ‘em know you’re were / yeah we all got a choice in life / you can run, you can hide, you can fall for the lies of / stand.”
While the lyrics encourage listeners to fight for what they know to be true, Wilson also points toward God as her firm foundation.

“This song was my way of expressing my love of God and my love for our great country, and those are two things I will always stand up and speak about,” Wilson explained in an Instagram post. “1 Corinthians 16:13 says, ‘Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.’ I hope this song reminds you to take a stand with me.”
Wilson finds it important to sing about truth and incorporate God in her music because she has seen the power of song time and time again. In her own life, music brought her great healing after the unexpected death of her brother and helped her find a path forward amidst the pain of that loss.
