Is Disney+ Actually Cracking Down on Password Sharing?

By Movieguide® Contributor

Disney+ is finally following through on its decision to take Netflix’s lead to crackdown on password sharing.

Per The Verge, “The timeline for Disney’s password-sharing crackdown has been a bit confusing so far. In February, Disney announced plans to roll out paid sharing and also began notifying users about the change. It then launched paid sharing in a ‘few countries’ in June but provided no information on when it would reach the US.”

However, in an earnings call on Wednesday, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that in order to continue to grow “our subscriber base,” the company will begin “operationalizing paid sharing” in September.

He said, “We’ve had no backlash at all to the [paid sharing] notifications that have gone out and to the work that we’ve already been doing.”

The new feature recently arrived in the UK.

“Technically, Disney+ isn’t stopping password sharing but monetizing it, just like Netflix has done,” the Daily Mail reported. “Extra Members won’t have to live in the same household, but they will have to live in the same country, according to Disney.”

Subscribers should plan to “reassess whether the cost increase and additional pricing for extra users is worth it,” iMore added.

This announcement comes shortly after Disney+ revealed plans to increase prices again starting Oct. 17.

Movieguide® reported:

According to IndieWire, “Prices for the standalone streamers will raise by a buck or two per month for both the ad-free and ad-supported tiers, and the triple-play bundle that gets you Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ is also going up. But the prices for the premium tier of the Disney+/Hulu duo bundle and the recently-announced bundle that tacks on Max are staying the same.”

The price increase comes about a year after the company’s previous hike in 2023.

Part of the reason for the hike is Disney’s new continuous playlists feature for Disney+ subscribers.

Per Disney+, “This new feature bolsters the Disney+ offering, ahead of updated pricing for various plans later this year, providing subscribers with both a live and on-demand streaming experience that will continue to grow throughout the year.”

“Playlists are the latest example of how we’re providing the best value and experience for our subscribers every time they open Disney+,” said Alisa Bowen, Disney+ president. “Whether it’s news, kids’ content, popular genres, hit TV shows or blockbuster films, there will be something for everyone in a lean-back viewing experience based on seasonality and interest.”
