Will SMALLVILLE ever get a reboot? Star Tom Welling just explained why that might be easier said that done.
“It just doesn’t seem like our show is the type of show where that would happen,” he admitted on a recent episode of “Inside Of You With Michael Rosenbaum.” “I’m smiling and saying it will probably never happen. But I love the idea!”
SMALLVILLE’s 10 season run ended 14 years ago. The series chronicled a young Clark Kent who “struggles to find his place in the world as he learns to harness his alien powers for good and deals with the typical troubles of teenage life in Smallville, Kansas.”
Both Rosenbaum, who starred as Lex Luthor in SMALLVILLE, and Welling have expressed their desire for series creators, Al Gough and Miles Millar, to write a reboot, specifically an animated series that picks up where the live-action show left off. But that just might not be possible.
“The problem with most projects in development in any studio and/or any network is regime change,” Gough shared, per Fiction Horizon. “Warners has obviously gone through a lot, and I think the fact that they are in the process of rebooting SUPERMAN again, kind of unfortunately, I think, keeps our thing off the table for a bit. Everything comes around in one form or another. I just read the other day that they are rebooting BUFFY for Hulu.”
While a SMALLVILLE reboot isn’t completely dead, it is stuck in limbo. Welling and the rest of the crew feel they need to wait for the right time to pitch the idea to DC because James Gunn and Peter Safran are focused on rebuilding the DC Universe.
Additionally, Warner Bros. decided to cancel the show SUPERMAN & LOIS so that it wouldn’t clash with the new SUPERMAN film. That move alone shows how cautious Warner Bros. is being with anything related to the superhero.
But there’s still plenty of SMALLVILLE content for fans to enjoy.
Last year, Rosenbaum launched a re-watch podcast called the “Talkville Podcast,” where fans can “join costars Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum as they dissect a new episode every week from one of the greatest shows of all time, SMALLVILLE.”

“Can’t believe it’s been so many years. But the good times just keep on rolling with our Re-Watch podcast, @talkvillepodcast. Without you all, this would be impossible. Can’t thank you enough for your love and support throughout the years. ‘Always hold on to Smallville,'” Rosenbaum wrote on Instagram when they launched the podcast.
While no official SMALLVILLE reboot is in the works, Welling and Rosenbaum — and many of their fans — haven’t given up hope quite yet.
