Jesse Hutch Missed the Role of a Lifetime but Knows ‘God Has a Plan’
By Movieguide® Contributor
After missing out on the career deal of a lifetime, actor Jesse Hutch explained why he believes God used that disappointment for His glory.
“I’ve been working in film/television for 23 years now, and a business deal has been on my desk, and this particular business deal, you could call it a game changer. It would affect my family. It would affect my career. It would affect our finances. It would kind of affect our dreams. There’s so many things kind of wrapped and layered into this that it was pretty amazing,” Hutch said in an Instagram post.
Hutch had put so much hope and excitement into this project, and his family joined in too. His kids were super excited for the role and couldn’t wait to hear if he got the part.
“So I was waiting for a call, my kids know I’ve been waiting for the call, and the call came in, and all my kids were there, and we could see the name,” he said. “And I go, and I pick it up, and I put in my earbuds, and I go, and I sit down, and all the kids are sitting there with me, and they’re all watching my face, and they’re like, ‘Did you get it? Did you get it? Did it work out?'”
“And I’m waiting, and I’m hearing from my team, and they say, ‘You know, Jess, sorry to have to make this call, but this one’s not going your way,’” Hutch recalled. “And so I tell all my kids, ‘No. No, it’s not going to work out.’ And I can see their hearts fall because they were in anticipation with me. And in that moment, I mean, I’m on the verge of tears, right, and I probably was teetering on the edge of just disappointment, and I finish the phone call.”
“And I get off the phone and my kids just want to confirm it and they’re like, ‘Dad. Like, what do you mean?’ Like, ‘It’s not going your way? It’s not working? You’re not taking the job?’ Like, ‘What is it?’” he continued. “And I said, ‘No. No, I’m not doing the job guys.’ And, so, I could feel their, I don’t know if pain’s the right word, but I could feel them empathizing with me. And, you know, as a dad, I look in their eyes, and I’m just like, ‘Oh man, this would have been good for them too, you know.’”
However, as Hutch faced this disappointment and shared the setback with his kids, he found solace in knowing that the Lord had a plan for him. Even when the plan doesn’t go the way he wants it to, Hutch trusts that everything is coming together for God’s glory.
“God has a plan, and I truly believe with all my heart and that was my prayer even leading up to this,” he said. “At least I had the answer — it wasn’t the answer I wanted but that’s why I trust it’s the answer that God wanted, you know, or He’s going to use it at the very least, right?”
“And so, I just trust that there is a path that God set for the future. That there is something there that is better for my family — better for me maybe — you know what I mean, and there’s a part of you that reasons all this out in your head, and then there’s something in your heart and in your spirit that just has a settling with it. Just a peace,” Hutch added.
The Lord was already moving through this disappointment as Hutch took the time to encourage others who were facing major setbacks of their own.
“I believe that you need to have, like, what I call a mourning period where you just mourn…And sometimes that lasts 10 seconds and sometimes it lasts four hours and maybe it’s longer, maybe it’s weeks, months, I don’t know; that’s between you and whatever you’re dealing with,” Hutch said.
“So, anyway, I just wanted to come on here and share with everyone that if you feel alone; If you feel like you’re going through a disappointment right now, or a really hard time and you feel like you’re the only human being on the planet that is in this scenario, in this situation, it’s not true. So, I just pray for all of you out there right now that just need to have some wind in your sails. Just need to be kind of lifted up… I see you. You’re awesome. God’s got this. You got this. And let’s rock it,” he added.
Hut’s post is a great reminder that God is with us in all seasons. Not only that, but God brings us through all seasons of life for His glory. He redeems even the most broken situations and while that doesn’t make the pain go away, it does give us something to cling to when times get rough.

Great American Family star Jesse Hutch walks the walk when it comes to his faith.
“If you say you believe something, then live that out,” the actor told CBN’s Faithwire. “Live it out in your marriage, live it out at your workplace, live it out in your community, live it out in your finances, your parenting, how you handle strangers…just live that out.”
In everything Hutch does, faith is his foundation.
“You need a base to operate from no matter what you do…For my wife and I, it’s faith, that’s where we go to,” he said previously. “Because there’s not a lot of good leaders out there and that’s just the fact and so, who am I gonna follow? You have to answer that question, and for me I follow Scripture, I follow the Word of God, I follow Jesus Christ.”
Hutch’s faith impacts what roles he decides to take on.
