John Krasinski Made His New Movie ‘For My Kids’

Actor John Krasinski recently spoke on why his new movie IF is “his most personal movie yet.”
“I made this movie for my kids,” THE OFFICE actor shared. “I’ve always wanted to make a movie for my kids, but I wasn’t sure what to do. And I had this idea to do something with imaginary friends, but I wasn’t sure what my take on it would be.”
Krasinski explained how he and his wife Emily Blunt would watch their daughters “go into this magical world that as parents were not invited into” and that “they were themselves and they were fearless, and they were doing all these amazing things doing all these amazing voices.” This inspired him to create a film about this world.
Joining the film is none other than Krasinski’s former OFFICE co-star, Steve Carell.
“I wrote the part for Steve, so I actually couldn’t write this script without having his voice in my head, but I didn’t know he was going to say yes,” Krasinski said.
He shared a touching moment when he and Carell reunited for the first time in years.
“He walked in, and I had this big smile, I thought we were going to laugh. And he came up he gave me the biggest hug, and he looked at me like a brother, and he said, ‘I just wanted to say how proud I am of you.’ And he said ‘I read this script, I love it.’ And he said ‘but ever since you started writing and directing, I love everything you do.’ And I wept, just wept… it meant the world because that’s family, you know?”
IF follows “a girl who has superpowers that give her the ability to ‘see everyone’s imaginary friends’ and uses her gift to ‘reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids.’”
Along with Carell, the movie stars Ryan Reynolds, Louis Gossett Jr. and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
“I just called everyone up and said ‘Listen, you have no reason to do this. It’s a movie about imaginary friends. It’s also helping kids cope with growing up and stuff like that.’ And I said ‘If you want to do it, great.’ I’ve never had quicker yeses in my life,” Krasinski said.
The movie is distributed by Paramount Pictures and is set to release Friday, May 17.

“I gotta say it just sort of happens organically,” he said. “It’s one of those things where I was a huge fan of hers before I even met her, so I continue to be a huge fan of hers in everything she does. So we’re just extremely supportive, we get what the job is and that you gotta travel and do some stuff, but it’s always about coming back home and being together, it’s the most important thing.
