Katy Perry Receives Backlash for Supporting Conservative Pastor Father
By Movieguide® Staff
Pop artist Katy Perry received backlash from fans after the 36-year-old posted an advertisement for her Christian father’s clothing line, which he announced following the 2020 election.
Perry’s father, Keith, is a Christian preacher whose aim is to unite Americans with the new clothing line. His daughter and AMERICAN IDOL judge posted about it on Instagram and shared a video of her dad plugging his new “Nothing But American” brand.
“We haven’t always seen [eye-to-eye] but I’m proud of my dad n bro for coming up with this!” Perry posted on Instagram.
Perry’s father’s primary goal is to move beyond the democratic and republican labels and to focus on authentic American values.
“Hey everyone, I’m Keith and I want to ask you a question,” Keith said in the promotional video. “Are you tired of the division that is destroying our country? Are you sick of losing your family and friends because they just don’t agree with your political views? Well, I am, and I know there’s a lot of people out there that have the same feeling in the same way.”
Keith continued: “No matter what you believe, at the end of the day we’re all Americans and I designed this T-shirt because I want people to know that, even though you may have a different religion or political view than I do, I still will be there for you and I’ll still consider you my friend, my neighbor and my fellow America.”
Despite the message of unity, many of Perry’s fans shared their displeasure in Perry’s actions.
One fan wrote, “Do you care about our mental health or not??”
Another responded, “You need to realize it is YOUR PRIVILEGE being able to speak to your family even if they are republicans or conservatives. most of us feel threatened by those people so thats why you need to stop to spread the ‘love your conservative parents’ propaganda.”
Despite the backlash, Perry did not delete the tweet.
This is not the first instance where Perry preached unity and received hostility in return.
Fans previously unleashed vitriol against Perry when the pop star said she reached out to family members with opposing viewpoints.
“The first thing I did when the presidency was called is text and call my family members who do not agree and tell them I love them and am here for them,” Perry wrote on Twitter.
Despite the backlash, Perry continues to publicly support her family and even dedicated her American Music Awards Performance to her dad.
the first thing I did when the presidency was called is text and call my family members who do not agree and tell them I love them and am here for them. #FamilyFirst. Call your family today. Happy Sunday. ♥️
