New York Knicks star Trey Jemison turned to the Bible — and football — to show us how we can experience God’s peace.
He began an Instagram video with Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Jemison then recalled a quote he heard once. It went, “For you to have peace that surpasses your understanding, you guys have to stop trying to understand.”

The guard explained this concept by reflecting on his favorite quarterback, Drew Brees, scoring a touchdown with limited time left on the clock.
“I remember growing up watching the football games, and the Saints would be up on top. Saints to be up seven. The other team goes down and scores. However, it’s the fourth quarter when they scored. It gave Drew Brees too much time,” Jemison said. “They’ll give Drew Brees around two minutes. And you were sitting like, dang, is that enough time?
“If you were a true Saints fan, you knew, like, don’t even worry about it,” he continued. “You give Drew two minutes, you’re gonna get down that field. Next thing you know, they’re kicking the ball. We’re catching it. We’re on the 20. We throw the ball. We are on the 35, we are on the 40. We hit the 50. Now we’re in the red zone, and the whole time, it wasn’t a question of how we were going to score. We knew who was about to score. We knew Breeze had the ball in his hand, and we didn’t question it. We trusted that. We trusted in Drew Brees because he’s done it time and time again.”
Jemison explained that that’s the key to reaching “peace that surpasses all understanding.”
“The ball is in God’s hands right now. Don’t worry about how far you have to go or how much time is left; leave it in His hands and let Him work. Stop trying to understand how,” the Knicks forward emphasized.
“Do me a favor. I need you to put so much focus on the who, you forget about the how. I’m trying to understand it. Focus on who got the ball in their hands, and that’s Jesus,” Jemison concluded.
It’s not up to us to try to understand everything; it’s up to us to trust the One who is in control of everything.
