LA Dodger Clayton Kershaw Reflects on God’s Providence
By Movieguide® Contributor
Clayton Kershaw had recently stood out for bringing Christian Faith and Family Day back to Dodger Stadium, but how did he come to have such a strong faith?
Growing up in a divorced home, Kershaw struggled with anxiety. He would worry about things that he could never control and struggled to trust that anything good would happen if he didn’t make it happen.
The day Kershaw got drafted into the MLB, he relinquished all control of his life.
“It’s just amazing the providence that God had in my life,” Kershaw told I Am Second. “God was there the whole time I just didn’t bother to look. I never thought in a million years that I’d ever get to play professional baseball, get to play in the major leagues, get to live out my dream. Since I was a kid, it’s all I ever wanted to do.”
Rather than worry about where his career would take him, Kershaw decided he would instead focus on his legacy off of the field. Understanding that playing in the MLB gives him a unique platform, Kershaw focuses on positively impacting his fans.
He also keeps his eyes centered on God by asking God to be with him before every game. Rather than allowing himself to blend in a be just another baseball player, Kershaw wants to play differently and stand out because he is a Christian.
“Whether it be pitching on the baseball mound or living my life outside of the baseball mound, it’s giving my life up to God that really puts my life in control,” he said.
It’s Kershaw’s trust in God that allows him to continuously stand firm in his faith and do things like fight for the return of Christian Faith and Family Day.

Los Angeles Dodgers Pitcher Clayton Kershaw disagreed with the organizations choice to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence during the teams Pride Night. Kershaw then took action to expedite his announcement to relaunch the Christian Faith and Family Day at the stadium.
Kershaw told the Los Angeles Times, “I think we were always going to do Christian Faith Day this year, but I think the timing of our announcement was sped up. Picking a date and doing those different things was part of it as well. Yes, it was in response to the highlighting of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence [by the Dodgers].”
Kershaw announced on his Twitter, “Excited to announce the relaunch of Christian Faith and Family Day at Dodger Stadium on July 30th. More details to come— but we are grateful for the opportunity to talk about Jesus and determined to make it bigger and better than it was before COVID. Hope to see you on July 30th!”
Two weeks ago, the Dodgers announced they would uninvite the Sisters group to the Pride game due to backlash. However, following Kershaw’s Twitter post, the Dodgers reversed their course again.
