LEGO and Star Trek announced a crossover decades in the making. The toy company will finally create an official set to celebrate the historic franchise’s 60-year anniversary.

“The Lego Group and Paramount announced their first-ever collaboration to bring the iconic world of Star Trek to life in LEGO® brick form,” a press release for Star Trek Day revealed. “The LEGO Group and Star Trek have strong shared values of imagination, exploration and building a better tomorrow, making this an ideal partnership for fans of all ages. More details will be revealed soon.”

“I don’t have the words needed to express how much I love this,” one person commented.

The exciting announcement was one of many as Star Trek enters a milestone year to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Other announcements included a new show created for Paramount+, a Rose Bowl parade float, new digital comics and a scripted Star Trek podcast.

“The 60th anniversary celebrates ‘Space for Everybody,’ extending an open invitation to celebrate the future that Star Trek aspires to – a future of HOPE, a future of EXPLORATION and a future where we rise to the challenge to BE BOLD,” the press for the day said, per AP News.

While this is LEGO’s first collaboration with Star Trek, many fans will know it has a longstanding relationship with Star Wars, making space-themed sets extremely popular.

Though official details about the upcoming set have yet to be released, rumors have been flying since January of this year – months before the collaboration was even announced. The set is expected to center around the USS Enterprise NCC-1707-D and would include its full bridge crew, along with special accessories for each member.

Perhaps this partnership could lead to even more Star Trek content as LEGO has found major success in the past through LEGO-based video games about different franchises. Games like “LEGO Star Wars,” “LEGO Indiana Jones” and “LEGO Harry Potter” have maintained an enduring popularity years after their release.

In March, the company announced it would move its game development in-house, suggesting it has plans to release many more games in the future. At the same time, it nearly tripled its employees in its games division, bringing the number to over 1,800.

“We have made quite a few investments in the future – I’d almost rather overinvest,” CEO Niels Christiansen told the Financial Times. “That’s the benefit of being family-owned and long term.”

While the future of LEGO and Star Trek can only be speculated, it is nonetheless exciting that these companies are finally collaborating and bringing fans a new way to engage with the beloved franchise.
