Does Luca Guadagnino have his next project lined up? Sources have linked the director to ARTIFICIAL, a real life retelling of the firing and rehiring of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

“Guadagnino is in talks to direct” the project, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, adding the project is “being put together at lightning speed at Amazon MGM Studios.”

THR continued, “How fast is this moving? Sources say Amazon is looking to get production going this summer, with an eye to shoot in San Francisco and Italy.”

SPIDER-MAN star Andrew Garfield and A COMPLETE UNKNOWN’s Monica Barbaro are being eyed for the leads — Altman and chief technology office Mira Murati, respectively — but no casting has been confirmed yet. ANORA actor Yura Borisov is also said to be in the running for a role as Ilya Sutskever, an OpenAI co-founder who headed the movement to oust Altman.

“While not confirmed, sources say the film revolves around the period at the artificial intelligence company OpenAI in 2023 that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a matter of days,” Deadline reported

ARTIFICIAL is still technically in development, as no one has officially been attached to the project, but it seems like Amazon MGM Studios is eager to get this movie off the ground.

This is the third time Guadagnino has partnered with the studio, following last year’s blockbuster CHALLENGERS and the upcoming AFTER THE HUNT, which pairs Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri.

If Guadagnino accepts this directing gig, it comes at a perfect time — it was announced earlier this year that his planned summer project, SGT. ROCK, would not be moving forward.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote it was “unclear” why the movie, based on a DC Comics hero and starring Colin Farrell in the titular role, was shut down. However, one insider said “it came down to the project’s scheduling needs of shooting outdoors.”

The same insider stressed that the project is “not going away, and would be reassessed at the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026,” but another source pointed out that Guadagnino is still “untested” when it comes to big action movies.

“Even though the budget was in the $70 million range, a paltry sum for comic book movies, higher ups may have wavered in their confidence,” THR explained.

ARTIFICIAL’s cast and crew are still up in the air, but it looks like there’s plenty of interest in the project from major Hollywood players.
