MAGNUM P.I. Stars Tease Series’ Ending: ‘Fans Are Going To Be Really Excited’

MAGNUM P.I. is officially coming to an end, and star Zachary Knighton promises fans will be “really excited.”

“Maybe we didn’t know the show was going to end, but we had an inkling, so everybody wrapped it up really nicely,” Knighton, who plays Rick, told TV Insider. “I think the fans are going to be really excited about it.”

Perdita Weeks (Juliet Higgins) echoed her co-star’s statements, saying the show ends in a “very sweet” way for her character and Magnum (Jay Hernandez), and hopes “people will be content with it because it is the end.”

Weeks also called the show’s ending “bittersweet” but added, “I’m really glad that it ended where it did, to be honest.”

“Once Magnum and Higgins were together, I think there was a sort of shelf life,” she explained. “I don’t think we wanted to see them get divorced. Kitchen sink drama. It just wouldn’t have had quite the allure. And I told [showrunner] Eric [Guggenheim] this, whilst it is very sad to say goodbye to it, obviously, and everyone, I think it’s a nice place that we ended up.”

In addition to being a star of MAGNUM P.I., Weeks also got the chance to direct an episode of the fifth and final season.

“I was very pleased to [direct an episode] towards the end because it gave me a long time to shadow a lot of really great, very seasoned directors. Everyone was really generous with their time and advice,” she told TV Guide. “It was so much fun.”

Details about MAGNUM P.I.’s ending have been kept under wraps, but Knighton gave fans a hint about what might be coming.

“I’m just gonna say this: There might be a ring or rings. And I’m not talking [J.R.R.] Tolkien here!” he joked. “I’m not talking about LORD OF THE RINGS. I’m talking, like, put a ring on it, you know what I’m saying?”

Movieguide® previously reported on the final season of MAGNUM P.I.:

NBC announced MAGNUM P.I. Season 5 Part 2 will arrive on October 4.

“The second batch of 10 episodes was originally expected to air in 2024,” MSN reported. “The Magnum P.I. Season 5 part 2 release date, however, has been moved up to October 4, 2023. New episodes will begin airing weekly on NBC that night, and they will be available to stream the following day on Peacock.”

Viewers who want to get caught up before season 5 will need to jump from one streaming service to another. The show’s first four seasons are only available on Amazon’s Freevee platform, while the fifth will be exclusively on Peacock.

Part 2 will feature most of the same cast as Part 1: “Jay Hernandez as Thomas Magnum, Perdita Weeks as Juliet Higgins, Zachary Knighton as Orville ‘Rick’ Wright, Stephen Hill as Theodore ‘TC’ Calvin and Amy Hill as Teuila ‘Kumu’ Tuileta.”

MAGNUM P.I.’s showrunner Eric Guggenheim revealed that BETTER CALL SAUL’s Patrick Fabian will also appear in Part 2.

“MAGNUM P.I. [Season 5 Part 2] will…have a closer focus on the show’s relationships, especially as it relates to Juliet and Magnum. It’s been teased that the duo’s honeymoon phase is over and that they’ll be facing some roadblocks ahead,” Screen Rant reported.

“The second half of MAGNUM P.I. Season 5 will be the final season, wrapping up the reimagined modern adventures of Thomas Magnum,” MSN added.
