Matthew McConaughey shared what his faith means to him, from his thoughts on God’s plan to the importance of prayer in his life.

“I’m a believer. I believe in God,” he said during an interview with Relevant Magazine, going into detail about his own thoughts on God’s plan for us.

“God’s laying out the highways, but we each have our hand on the wheel,” the actor explained. “I look at Earth. I look at the little dot that we are on the planet. The world’s turning. And we’re that little individual on the planet. That smallness can make you go, ‘Oh my gosh. I’m nothing. None of what I do matters.’”

He continued, “But a place of humility is actually when you realize, ‘Oh, it allllll matters.’ There’s a great empowerment that comes with that.”

The actor also spoke about the role prayer plays in his life, explaining, “Prayer is inventory.”

“I go to church once a week,” McConaughey said. “I go, I pray and I do inventory. I take a deep breath, understand myself as me being number two in God’s house, and go back through my week.”

McConaughey has been open about his Christian faith, telling GQ in a 2014 interview, “As soon as we had children, I was like, ‘You know what? [Going to church] was important to my childhood.’ Even if it was just for the ritual of giving an hour and a half on Sunday to yourself, to pray and to think about others, even if you’re tired or whatever.”

“I noticed how much I missed it and needed it,” he continued. “It’s a time for me to take inventory of my last week, to look at what’s in the future and say my thank-you’s and think about what I can work on to do better.”

He explained that he sees God as “somebody who can help answer my questions. Someone who has a hand in all of this miracle we call life, which I believe is a miracle.”

In his 2014 Oscar acceptance speech, McConaughey thanked God, saying He had “graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand.”

“He has shown me that it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates,” he added. “In the words of the late [British actor] Charlie Laughton, who said, ‘When you got God, you got a friend and that friend is you.’”

McConaughey’s recent comments about his faith are a reminder of the important role it plays in his — and all of our — lives.
