Tom Cruise’s latest MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie, THE FINAL RECKONING, just crushed Ben Stiller’s biggest NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM hit.

THE FINAL RECKONING pushed the movie aside to make it in the top 200 list of highest-grossing movies in global box office history, Collider reported this week.

One thing does falter the success, though — the M:I movie’s massive budget. The movie cost a purported $400 million to make but grossed only $195 million domestically and $585 million worldwide. In some ways it’s considered somewhat of a box office disappointment, given the cost-to-profit ratio.

In comparison, the first NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM movie made about $580 worldwide and cost $110 million to make. It was the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2006, Giggster reported.

Part of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads, ”MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE –THE FINAL RECKONING is an exhilarating, patriotic, stirring, and profound thriller. It goes from exciting one action setpiece to another while always developing the characters, including supporting characters. It has lots of drama in tense scenes featuring the President.”

Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt “undergoes a symbolic death and resurrection, and, at one point he’s saved by Grace, the romantic female lead,” the review continues. “MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING has some intense violence and seven mostly light obscenities. So, it merits caution for older children.”

THE FINAL RECKONING broke two franchise records with the best opening day and opening weekend. It made $77 million across the four-day Memorial Day holiday, Men’s Fitness reported.

“A record opening on the eighth iteration is remarkable. It speaks to the longevity of the franchise,” Paramount’s distribution chief Chris Aronson said in a statement. “The spectacle of what Tom and McQ [director Christopher McQuarrie] put on screen is one-of-a-kind in today’s marketplace.”

Cruise set a new Guinness world record with one of his stunts in FINAL RECKONING, The Hollywood Reporter said. He now has the record for the most burning parachute jumps by an individual.

After FINAL RECKONING released, Cruise said, “This weekend was one for the history books! Congratulations and thank you to every filmmaker, every artist, every crew member and every single person who works at the studios. To every theater and every employee who helps bring these stories to audiences, thank you.”

“I’d rather just people see it and enjoy and we’ve had an amazing time doing it and it’s been a lot of fun and I just want you all to enjoy it,” the actor said. “Enjoy this and know everything is the culmination has come to this moment right now.”

Despite its high production cost, the movie has certainly had some success and is praised for its thrilling action and redemptive themes.
