MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: THE FINAL RECKONING makes waves in China.

The movie earned $25.6 million over the May 30-June 1 weekend. A 19% chunk of that profit ($4.9 million) is all from Imax screenings, which MISSION movies, with their high-adrenaline plots and action shots, lend themselves to. The movie marked Imax’s biggest opening in China of 2025, Variety reported on June 1.

It’s also the best-performing American movie in China overall for 2025, Bloomberg reported.

Imax CEO Rich Gelfond said, “We were particularly encouraged by the great Imax results in China, which bodes well for the many Hollywood tentpoles set for release there in the weeks ahead.”

ENDLESS JOURNEY OF LOVE took second place at China’s Box Office with $7.6 million. Made by Moayan Movie, the animated film follows a magic-wielding village girl in 1930s China. As authorities target her, she uncovers important secrets. The voice cast stars Karry Wang, Liu Xiaoyu and Zhou Shen.

DORAEMON: NOBITA’S ART WORLD TALES came in third place at $7.5 million. The third installment in the Japanese franchise follows Doraemon as he and his friends jump into paintings. The voice cast stars Wasabi Mizuta, Megumi Ōhara and Yumi Kakazu.

LILO & STITCH, which topped America and other markets, came in fourth place in China at $6.6 million. Hong Kong’s BEHIND THE SHADOWS came in fifth place at $4.3 million. The flick follows Louis Koo, a P.I. who investigates an interesting case involving murder and adultery.

The total weekend box office made $58.2 million. The year-to-date revenue is $3.82 billion, up 26.6% from the same time last year.

Relations between China and the U.S. are stringent, even when it comes to Hollywood distribution in China. In April, China said it would reduce the number of U.S. movies allowed in its market. However, it does have HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH on its lineup this year.

In the U.S., MISSION sits in second place to LILO & STITCH. Fandom Wire points out that this is likely due to the fact that MISSION is not as family friendly as LILO, so families weren’t booking tickets. Whereas adults in China were drawn to Imax, and LILO & STICH also came out a week earlier in the country.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: THE FINAL RECKONING currently has an 80% Tomatometer score and 89% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also made a record for an unexpected reason. It was the first in the eight-movie franchise to not win at the box office on its opening weekend. Guess it was no match for a Hawaiian kid and her pet alien.
