Musician and writer Myshel Wilkins explained how growing up in the mission field opened her eyes to the power of the Lord early in her life as she saw those around her pursue God with all they had.
“It was pretty eye opening for me as a young girl to see how the power of God transcended language, right? They didn’t have to know the song, but when the anointing rested on a song, it would just fill the room. And everybody understood the presence of the Lord,” Wilkins told Movidguide®. “As a young girl, it just blew my mind to just see people coming from all around the village to come to this one moment.”
“They would come so hungry. And I saw them desire God’s word with such a hunger that just floored me,” she added. “And because of that hunger, I saw the Lord move in ways. I saw miracles, signs and wonders happen in those places because of the hunger and because of the love, the desperation for Jesus.”
Because of how formational seeing that hunger was, Wilkins has never forgotten how powerful the Lord can be when people pursue Him wholeheartedly. Wilkins laments the fact that Christians in America do not have this same fervor and works to bring it to those around her. She believes the best way to do this is through consistent studying of the Bible.
“The power of God’s word, it is living, it is breathing. You can read the Bible a million times and still learn something profound and it grows us,” she said. “It’s just so wonderful, the word of God. And so, the enemy hates it because literally when we speak it, it’s like light goes from our mouth and it disperses the darkness…[The enemy] hopes you won’t read the word. They hope that you won’t be armed with His power.”
Wilkins is one of many Christian artists who work to bring God’s word to the masses. More and more musicians realize their songs should speak to the power of God.
“What we want to contend for are these deep, biblical, wondrous worship songs that really paint a picture of who God is. You know — one way I talk about this is we like talking about helpfulness in worship. So we’ll sing a song about God as a shepherd or deliverer or as a rescuer of some kind; He’s the rock, He’s my comfort. And all that stuff’s really good; it’s wonderful. But we have to talk about holiness too.” Matt Redman previously explained. “It’s helpfulness and holiness.”

To achieve this goal, Redman encourages those who have an ambitious to write worship music to partner with those around them who have scriptural expertise so the messages they sing are theologically sound.
“My big message is don’t try and do this on your own,” Redman said. “If there’s a pastor you have a great relationship with or if there’s a pastor you have a great relationship with or if there’s somebody who’s further along than you are in terms of being a wordsmith or a theological thinker of some kind, then try and team up.”
Wilkins is an amazing example of an artist who works to glorify God in everything that she does and proclaim His holiness above all else. It is incredible how the seeds planted in her youth have blossomed and allow her to impact the faith of millions.
