NCIS’s Sean Murray Teases Possible Return For Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly

By Movieguide® Contributor

NCIS fans were sad to hear Mark Harmon would be leaving the crime show after 19 seasons, but showrunner Steven D. Binder has given fans hope for Harmon’s return.

While appearing at PaleyFest, Binder said, “Never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs [Harmon’s character] out. What the future will hold I can’t say, but I wouldn’t count anybody out, dead or alive, on the show.”

Sean Murray, who stars on NCIS as Special Agent Timothy McGee, has also mentioned the possibility of Harmon returning to the show.

“He does pop in,” Murray said, referring to Harmon’s role as an executive producer on the show. “I saw him two weeks ago actually. So, he’s around. It’s not like he’s packed up and left town or anything. I’m not saying this just to say it for a tease and all that, I really, truly believe that the Gibbs could pop up somewhere. I really believe that there’s a possibility of that happening.”

Murray also teased the possible return of another actor: Michael Weatherly. The actor just ended his show, BULL, and Murray let fans know he might be coming back to NCIS.

“I talk to Michael all the time, so we joke about that possibility sometimes,” Murray said.

Movieguide® previously reported on Harmon’s exit from NCIS:

After 18 seasons, Mark Harmon officially bid farewell to his lead role on the CBS staple NCIS.

“I’m not going back, Tim,” Harmon’s Gibbs said in the Oct. 11 episode, signaling his departure. “I’m not going back home.”

Harmon’s exit should not shock fans, as many media outlets, including Movieguide®, have reported on the speculation for more than a year.

However, just because Harmon will no longer be a series regular does not mean fans won’t see him again.

“As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show. Our north star has always been staying true to our characters, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go. So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years…never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out,” said Steven D. Binder, NCIS executive producer/showrunner.

Furthermore, CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl stated, “Mark’s always been part of the show, Mark’s always going to be part of the show. In terms of his on-air appearances, we’re just going to have to see how it plays out going forward.”

Many fans posted to social media that they would not watch the show after Harmon’s departure.

“I am a long time fan. But with Gibbs gone I’m a fan no more,” one person posted to Instagram.

“Without Gibbs there is no show..I just don’t care for the new guy at all..at least Gibbs got the ending he deserved,” another person wrote.

“If Gibbs goes, we all go!!” someone else commented.

Harmon will remain a franchise producer, though, and be engaged off camera.
