A new documentary will release next month highlighting the influence and legacy of LoveSong, a band that came together during the Jesus Movement and revolutionized Christian music.

“Like so many others, the band members – Chuck Girard, Tommy Coomes, Jay Truax, John Lehler, and Fred Field – became disillusioned with their empty, drug-fueled spiritual search. Their trajectory shifted when four of the members attended a Bible study at Calvary Chapel led by pastor Chuck Smith, leading LoveSong to become a Christian rock band,” a press release about the documentary explained. “In a short time, LoveSong’s music became the early soundtrack of the Jesus Movement that swept America, breaking boundaries and helping set the stage for the emergence of the Contemporary Christian Music genre.”

The documentary, titled A BAND CALLED LOVESONG: THE MUSIC & MOVEMENT OF THE JESUS REVOLUTION, will feature three episodes: the start of the band and their coming to faith, the spread of their music reaching an international audience and the legacy they have left on the industry, paving the way for other contemporary Christian artists. The documentary will feature many who are prominent in Christian culture today as they share how LoveSong impacted their journey.

“If it hadn’t been for that first album with LoveSong, I’m not sure I would be doing what I am doing today, and that record changed my life,” said Michael W. Smith, one of the guests on the documentary.

Much like the movie JESUS REVOLUTION, this documentary also remind viewers of how the emptiness of hippie culture led millions to find a truly fulfilling life through Christ and look ahead to how the country is once again set up for a major revival.

“That was not enough, and they just recognized their own spiritual need…and they didn’t know what to do with it,” director Jon Erwin said when making JESUS REVOLUTION. “And that led to this countercultural revolution…and much of this revolt of free love, drugs [and] rock and roll. That was all a spiritual quest.”

“A lot of the chaos we’re seeing today, we should celebrate a little bit because it’s a generation waking up to the fact that, ‘Something’s missing in my life, and I don’t know what’s missing, but I gotta go find out,’” Erwin continued. “That’s gonna lead to some chaos for a minute.”

The fruits of this are already being seen as mini-revivals have spread across the country, particularly within younger communities such as college campuses.

A BAND CALLED LOVESONG: THE MUSIC & MOVEMENT OF THE JESUS REVOLUTION will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video and SalemNOW starting on September 19.
