Newsboys Explain Why They Stay Close to God
By Movieguide® Contributor
Newsboys frontmen Michael Tait and Adam Agee recently discussed how they see God at work in their music and lives.
“In reality, it hasn’t always been roses. It hasn’t always been, you know, on the up and up. I have definitely walked with the Lord closer at times and not so close at times,” Tait told Annie Downs on the “That Sounds Fun” podcast.
“Every man or woman is either running towards God or from God, there’s no middle ground,” he added, quoting Bono.
“Every time I’ve been running from God, I’d rather run towards Him, because running from Him, you don’t want to fall in the hands of angry God, you know, and God has a way of getting your attention, but I’ve had my moments for sure.”
Agee agreed, sharing part of his testimony and how he works to stay close to God.
At 19 years old, Agee gave his life to Christ and made his faith his own, choosing to “give this gift” of music “right back to God.”
“It was an obvious thing,” he said. “It was obvious that He had given me the ability to pick up guitar real quick. First time singing other than just like a couple, you know, little choir things in church here and there, nothing really. And then all of a sudden I’m singing and writing songs and playing guitar.”
Later, Agee added, “I made a conscious decision. I was like, ‘I’m just going to use this for what God wants me to.'”
God has used both Tait and Agee to spread His name around the world through the Newsboys.
“Newsboys is one of the biggest bands in Christian music history, having sold more than 10 million units across 23 recordings and garnering boundless accolades, including 1 RIAA Platinum certification and 8 Gold certifications, 33 #1 radio hits, four GRAMMY nominations, two American Music Award nominations and multiple Dove Awards,” Capitol Christian Music Group wrote of the band.
In 2024, the group released a new single called “Heaven on Earth.”
The lyrics read:
One way Jesus, set our hearts on fire
Send Your Spirit, we are crying out
Heaven on earth here and now (Oh, here and now)
One way Jesus, Holy Ghost revival
Send Your thunder, let it shake this ground
Heaven on earth here and now
Part 1 of the Heaven on Earth album released in July, and Part 2 just dropped last week.
