Have you heard of Labubu dolls? And no that isn’t some new Gen Z slang. It’s a new toy that people are obsessed with.

This creepy doll — it resembles a bunny but is technically an elf — has gone viral as consumers line up outside of stores to get their hands on one. The toy (which also comes in fashion accessories) has been purchased by celebrities such as Simone Biles and Hilary Duff, leading one to wonder: What is the hype all about?

The toys were created by artist Kasing Lung who based the characters off the series “The Monsters.”

Sold by Pop Mart, the company website explains, “In 2015, Kasing Lung created a fairy world in three picture books inspired by Nordic mythology and populated it with magical characters both good and evil, calling them ‘The Monsters.’”

It shares that the character Labubu is “a small monster with high, pointed ears and serrated teeth. Despite a mischievous look, Labubu is kind-hearted and always wants to help, but often accidentally achieves the opposite.”

One “Blind Box” Labubu costs $27.99, and a set of six is $167.94.

The toys seemed to gain popularity when Lisa from the K-Pop band BLACKPINK shared her love for the creatures.

“As soon as I got them, I go crazy, it’s like I spent all my money,” the singer told Vanity Fair. “I go POP MART everywhere, if I fly to New York, I go to Miami, I try to find POP MART there. Paris, you know, everywhere. Kind of like finding treasure.”

Although most call the character Labubu, Lisa explained that the ones that have a tail are actually called Zimomo.

The hype might be getting out of control, though. Last week at an auction in China, a life-sized Labubu sold for over $170,000. Founder of Art and Culture Exchange Felix Kwok said of the sale, “In a somewhat stagnant art auction market, this development is both stimulating and indicative.”

So, are Labubu dolls worth it?

Like any non-essential purchase, that question is subjective, but it’s worth noting that Labubu originates from pagan Norse mythology and represents a character who can’t seem to control her actions.

Proverbs 25:28 says “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls,” so Labubu’s lack of integrity is not something to aspire to. With that being said, it would not make much sense for a Christian to purchase a Labubu doll.
