The stars of HGTV’s HOLMES FAMILY RESCUE shared the one question homeowners need to ask to avoid renovation issues.

“Why?” star Mike Holmes told Realtor.com. “’Why?’ will always dictate what you need.”

Holmes told homeowners to ask “why?” about everything, from what type of adhesive your contractor is using to the type of building process they’re following.

He continued, “You can find out a million things in a million different ways, so you’re going to have to make your own evaluation as to which is the best [building product or procedure] to use.”

“Learn as much as you can to speak to the contractor so you have proper language [and] understanding [of] it coming back and forth,” Holmes explained.

His kids, Michael Jr. and Sherry, agreed, with Michael Jr. saying, “There’s certain building technologies that you as a homeowner should know about when you’re going through this process so you can say, ‘This is what I want. This is the overall goal that I want. Help me get there.”

“You have to have that good relationship with your contractor in order to understand, because you’re not going to understand every single product and every single code that’s thrown at you,” Sherry added.

These are the kinds of things the Holmes family handles on HOLMES FAMILY RESCUE where, per HGTV’s official synopsis, “they join forces to rescue homeowners from botched construction jobs and renovation fatigue.”

The Holmes’ are celebrating the premiere of Season 2 of their show, and the trio recently spoke to TV Insider about what it’s like working together.

“The wonderful part about this is having my kids working with me all these years. You end up getting better and better,” Holmes said. “Working together is more fun.”

Sherry agreed, saying, “We do have a really good time…Working with family is a huge aspect of the television show. If we fight, don’t get along or don’t talk to each other, it’s all of that.”

Holmes called HOLMES FAMILY RESCUE “the most real television show you can watch on HGTV or any channel,” adding, “There are no scripts. Everything just happens as we go in. We figure out a way to help them and fix it. There is so much excitement in this season.”

“These homeowners were all so wonderful and sweet and deserving,” Sherry said. “To be able to go in and fix things for them, you really can’t help but think of yourselves as superheroes at the end of the day.”

Michael Jr. shared, “These stories are so real and relatable. People at home may have gone through what they are or know someone who has. Just watching us, it’s a feel-good show. There are a lot of good takeaways. We’re having a ton of fun doing it.”
