‘Obsess Less’: Jennifer Garner Reveals Her Top Beauty Advice

By Movieguide® Contributor

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, actress Jennifer Garner shared some unexpected beauty advice she gives to her two teenage daughters.

“Look in the mirror less, obsess less, and look at the rest of the world to see what you could be using your time for instead,” she said.

Garner recognizes that the current cultural obsession with the self causes people to focus on their appearances more.

“We all look at our faces more than people used to,” Garner shared. “It doesn’t do you any good.”

In a world where people “obsess over changes or how to fix something on your face,” the mom of three encourages women to “be cautious when it comes to injecting anything into your face.”

“Don’t think that you’re 37 and you need to be shooting up your face,” she explained. “Be very, very incredibly judicious and wait as absolutely long as possible to add anything.”

She encourages people to be comfortable in their own skin, saying, “You don’t need to wear so much makeup or have such a constant blowout.”

For the women who look up to Garner, her advice provides a welcome alternative to the ever-changing cultural beauty standards.

The actress encourages women to take care of their hair and skin, “then you should feel good without adding anything major,” she added.

But while Garner promotes a more natural view of beauty, even that will not determine her worth.

For those frustrated by all the beauty advice and tips constantly coming from the media, remember that one’s worth will ultimately be found in Christ—not in whatever hair treatment, elaborate skincare routine or injections one uses to fit in with the world standards.

Movieguide® previously reported on the importance of church and family for Garner:

From going to church each week to having a day where she only tells her children “yes,” actress Jennifer Garner goes to great lengths to make faith and family a priority in her own life.

The YES DAY actress, known for her many family-friendly roles like MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN and THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN, opened up to Movieguide® about her new Netflix movie and how it reflects her own life.

“This is a very personal story for me,” the 48-year-old actress told Movieguide®. “I developed this script, I found the director, we created all of this together.”

Garner added that YES DAY is based mainly on her own experience with family.

“I was much cooler before I had kids. Are you kidding me?” Garner joked. “And now I’m like a drill sergeant. So, yes. And of course, my kids and I have had ‘yes day’ for the last nine years.”

Garner shared that “yes days” are not her family’s only tradition. Garner, who shares three children with her ex-husband and fellow actor Ben Affleck, says that church is a big part of her family’s everyday lives.

“I feel the same about church on Sundays,” Garner said. “It really just starts the whole week, you know, just thinking together, just being together for that hour really starts us off right. And I am missing being in church physically in person. I really miss that sense of community.”
