Last week, however, Andrejczyk announced on Facebook that she would sell her medal to help pay for 8-month-old Miloszek Malysa’s heart surgery.
A fundraiser noted that the boy needed an emergency operation in the United States in order to live.
A Polish convenience store chain called Zabka bought Andrejczyk’s medal, offering $125,000 according to reports.
After buying the medal, the company let Andrejczyk keep her silver medal while also providing the money to help Malysa.
“We were moved by the beautiful and extremely noble gesture of our Olympian,” the company said in a Facebook post. “We also decided that the silver medal from Tokyo will remain with Ms. Maria, who showed how great she is.”
Translated from her Facebook account, Andrejczyk said that the medal was a “symbol of struggle, faith and the pursuit of dreams despite many adversities.”
“I hope that for you it will be a symbol of the life we fought for together,” she added.
