An Open Letter to Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer and Other Abusers and Their Victims

An Open Letter to Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer and Other Abusers and Their Victims

Dear Harvey, Matt and Others:

Exposing the abusers and the abused has been extremely painful while taking up a lot of news these days. Justice and truth must prevail.

In the interest of stopping the abuse, and giving recompense to the abused, however, there’s a deeper issue that’s been avoided, and that issue is that there’s a solution to the abuse and being abused, and that solution is the power of God’s grace. There are many other suggestions people have to solve these problems, but all of them fall short. Even the American Association of Psychiatry has admitted that nobody’s been healed by psychology or psychiatry, but there have been many who have been transformed by God’s grace. This doesn’t make them any better, but it does provide the answer to the cycle of bad behavior, which is part of the human condition.

I grew up in the entertainment industry and rejected all things that had to do with organized religion. I had a sterling career at universities and was involved with a lot of self-destructive behavior, including drugs and promiscuity. Somebody actually challenged me to analyze and rebuke the Bible. While trying to do just that, I encountered a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and all of the bad behavior stopped. I didn’t even reflect on how quickly and totally it had stopped, until my Hollywood and Broadway star father mentioned in his 90s how difficult he had been before he met Jesus Christ seven years after I did. Suddenly, I recalled how easy it was to give up my destructive behavior when I met Jesus and was filled with His Spirit.

This option was something I never wanted and didn’t seek, and I doubt if you or any other unrepentant sinner wants it or is seeking it either. However, as the justice gets more intense for the abused and the ones who abused them, you may want to consider the one real truth that may set you free and transform your life. As Jesus says in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that you may have life and have it abundantly” (ESV).
