OpenAI’s Latest Update Promises Even More Intelligent AI
By Movieguide® Contributor
OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, has released an updated model of its already impressive AI program that will be even more intelligent than before.
“We trained these models to spend more time thinking through problems before they respond, much like a person would,” OpenAI said. “Through training, they learn to refine their thinking process, try different strategies, and recognize their mistakes.”
To test its newest model, called o1, the company presented it with the International Mathematics Olympiad exam. The new model scored 83%, a huge improvement from its last model which scored 13%.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said in an X post, “o1 is still flawed, still limited, and it still seems more impressive on first use than it does after you spend more time with it.” He added, “[B]ut also, it is the beginning of a new paradigm: AI that can do general-purpose complex reasoning.”

This update “may be particularly useful if you’re tackling complex problems in science, coding, math, and similar fields,” OpenAI said. However, “As an early model, it doesn’t yet have many of the features that make ChatGPT useful, like browsing the web for information and uploading files and images. For many common cases GPT-4o will be more capable in the near term.”
AI has received scrutiny recently. Although it can offer some positive and helpful tools, there is concern over how it is changing our future. Elon Musk, one of the creators of OpenAI, now fears its capabilities.
Movieguide® previously reported:
“I was one of the principal co-founders of Open AI. In fact, I named it,” Musk said.
The entrepreneur started the company with his friend Larry Page but grew “increasingly concerned that Larry was not sufficiently concerned with AI safety.”
“At one point he did call me a ‘specieist,’ I guess correctly labelled.” Musk explained. “I’m a specieist in favor of humans instead of machines.”
He fears that AI will one day take over, and humans will lose their working value because AI can do a “better” job. Musk’s former partner was okay with that.
Regardless of the future of AI, it is our job to stay cautious and use discernment about everything. It’s okay to embrace new technology, but we need to value human life above all else.
