REAGAN Takes No. 2 Spot at Labor Day Box Office
By Movieguide® Contributor
Despite going up against superhero blockbusters and action movies, indie biopic REAGAN is going strong at the box office, taking the No. 2 spot at the box office on Labor Day.
The Numbers reported that REAGAN came in second only to Marvel juggernaut DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, taking in a little over $2.3 million. The movie’s total gross stands at $10 million, per IMDb.
REAGAN’s box office numbers are still going strong. It’s in fourth place, behind DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, ALIEN: ROMULUS and TWISTERS — all movies from major studios.
Starring Dennis Quaid, Jon Voight, and Penelope Ann Miller, REAGAN “is a cinematic journey of overcoming the odds,” according to a description on the movie’s website. “Told through the voice of Viktor Petrovich, a former KGB agent whose life becomes inextricably linked with Ronald Reagan’s when Reagan first caught the Soviets’ attention as an actor in Hollywood, this film offers a perspective as unique as it is captivating.”
“Dennis Quaid brings to life a story that transcends the boundaries of a traditional biopic, offering a profound exploration of the enduring impact of the power of one man who overcame the odds, sustained by the love of a woman who supported him in his journey,” the description concludes.
A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:
Dennis Quaid gives a bravura performance in REAGAN as the beloved President, union leader and movie star. He’s just as good during the more intimate scenes as he is in the iconic public scenes. He’s supported by a great cast, including Jon Voight as a KGB analyst who closely follows Reagan’s beliefs and behavior. The movie’s focus on Reagan’s fight against communism gives a strong narrative structure to REAGAN’s stirring story of faith and patriotism.
Political biopics like REAGAN can be rather boring. However, Director Sean McNamara has made a lively movie that hardly ever flags. He lets his actors carry the story. Also, the movie benefits greatly by focusing on Reagan, and his wife Nancy’s, stirring fight against communism. It gives the movie a strong, cohesive narrative structure to its inspiring story of faith and patriotism.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that REAGAN is faring best with older moviegoers — “Roughly 85 percent of ticket buyers are over the age of 35 — including an unheard of 66 percent over the age of 55.”
The outlet also reported that these numbers are setting REAGAN up for a “promising run” when it hits VOD, as many older consumers prefer to watch new movies at home.
Movieguide® previously reported on what the stars of REAGAN want audiences to take away from the movie:
REAGAN star Dennis Quaid believes his new movie about former president Ronald Reagan has something for everyone.
“This is a great reminder…to people who lived it about what this country used to be and how great it still can be for those who were too young to know,” Quaid toldMovieguide®. “It reminds us we’re all Americans. This is our story, too.”
“I think we want people to be entertained,” added Penelope Ann Miller, who plays Nancy Reagan. “I see people moved at the end of the movie. It’s a relationship story, too, which is also a beautiful thing. So I think it has a little bit of everything in it, and hopefully people will just enjoy seeing a story and learning about these these these two people who became incredibly iconic and important in our history.”
