Rob Lowe is set to lead ABC’s new comedy, THE RAM, executive produced by Colin Cowherd and Peyton Manning.

THE RAM is a “workplace romantic comedy in which Rob Lowe plays a daily sports talk show host who falls for the new producer brought in to boost his ratings,” the logline reads.

Betsy Thomas, Bob Fisher and Rob Greenberg will write and executive produce the show. Eric Tannebaum, Kim Tannenbaum and Jason Wang of the Tannenbaum Co will executive produce with Cowherd, Manning, Jamie Horowitz and Ben Brown via Omaha Productions, Variety reported. Lowe will also executive produce.

It will be created under 20th Television, which has a first-look deal with Manning’s Omaha Productions. Another show, CHAD POWERS starring Glen Powell, has already come out under that deal.

Currently, ABC has only two scripted comedies, ABBOTT ELEMENTARY and SHIFTING GEARS. It’s also working on a SCRUBS reboot with several original cast members.

Soap Central said THE RAM isn’t meant to “stay in one lane.” It will expand ABC’s comedy reach while also pulling in sports viewers from ESPN or Fox Sports.

Lowe’s recent roles include starring in 9-1-1: LONE STAR and the Netflix comedy, UNSTABLE.

He’s always had a bold love for acting and got his start by knocking on Liza Minelli’s door when he was 10, he recalled in his memoir.

“My name is Rob Lowe. I want to be an actor and I was hoping to meet Miss Minnelli,” he told her husband, Jack Haley Jr., at the door. Minnelli invited Lowe into her living room, where they talking about theater and music.

“Good luck, kid. Maybe I’ll see you in Hollywood,” she told him.

Seven years later he got his big break in THE OUTSIDERS.

“We all were deadly serious and super-competitive,” Lowe said of THE OUTSIDERS main cast. He added, “The seriousness with which Francis [Ford Coppola] and everybody, all the actors, took it, was really ahead of its time.”

“Those [costars] are my guys, my homies, my frat brothers,” he said of Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell and Patrick Swayze.

“It’s funny, the movie meant different things to me over the years,” Lowe said. “As it was happening, it seemed perfectly natural, [and] that was my fraternity.”

He could see how that movie shaped the great actors — especially Tom Cruise — that they all became.

“To me, what’s great about the story is, there’s certain people who have always been who they are, and that element of them has powered them to where they are today and the rest is history,” Lowe said.

Lowe’s THE RAM doesn’t have a release date yet. As it’s at the beginning of development, it will likely come out next year at the earliest.
