In a culture that looks down on men for showing their love for their wives, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III says men should do the opposite and celebrate their wives more.

“It is almost as if loving your wife is a bad thing. Now it’s frowned upon, like you post a picture, you celebrate your family, and they’re like, ‘Ah, I hate this,'” Griffin said on the “Sports Spectrum” podcast. “Maybe some people don’t have that in their own lives, but I would encourage all men to continue to show their wives how much they love them.”

Griffin explained that his wife, Grete Griffin, a former Estonian heptathlete, gave up something for her career so that he could continue to pursue his dream in the NFL.

“For me and my wife, we got four daughters — 10, 8, 6 and 2 — and I wouldn’t be able to do what I do as a professional without her,” the former quarterback said. “She was supposed to run at the World Championships in Europe in 2018, and instead of going to the World Championships, she stayed at training camp with me as [it was] the most important training camp of my life.”

“In 2018, I’m coming back, haven’t played for a year, fourth quarterback on the roster in Baltimore, and I forced them to keep three quarterbacks,” he continued. “Every day after practice, she did snaps with me, helped me throw and did everything I needed to do to make that team. Like for me, I’ll always be indebted to her, not just for that, but for how great a mother she is.”

“And I think it’s important for us as men to show our women how much we love them. That is cool. It doesn’t make you a simp or whatever else they want to call you. It makes you a man,” the Fox Sports newscaster emphasized.

Just like wives are called to honor their husbands, the same is true for husbands.

1 Peter 3:7 reads, “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.”

Griffin certainly practices what he preaches. His Instagram is filled with sweet pictures of him with his wife and kids.

“I’m thankful for so many blessings, but God’s greatest gift to me was you @gretegiii,” he posted about his wife on Thanksgiving. “God didn’t just give me a partner. He gave me an angel who loves deeper and shines brighter than anyone I’ve ever met. You’ve given my life purpose, my heart peace, and this world more goodness than it even deserves.”

We can all take note of Griffin’s message and seek ways to show our spouses just how much we love them.
