Ronald Reagan’s Son Urges Americans to Pray for Our Leaders

By Movieguide® Contributor

Michael Reagan, the son of President Ronald Reagan, knows the importance of praying for our leaders, no matter who they may be.

In an exclusive interview with Movieguide®, Reagan shared the important lessons he learned from his father, beginning with his faith.

“His faith was strong, but it became stronger after he was shot because he really felt he was saved for another purpose, as Pope John Paul was shot of few months later thought the same thing. He was saved [from] an assassin’s bullet for a higher purpose,” he explained. “And the two of them get together and bring peace to Poland and ultimately bring down the Berlin Wall.”

Now, after the 2024 election, Reagan encourages his fellow Americans to follow his father’s example.

“You may not agree with whoever is elected, but that is our president,” he explained. “We have to follow. Whoever that we could disagree and what have you, but in fact that is our president, and you pray. My dad would pray for the next president, no matter who it was, my father would pray for that person to be a great leader and to keep America safe. I hope America does that instead of getting into the vitrail positions that we’re in.”

President Reagan’s story — and faith — recently graced the big screen in REAGAN, starring Dennis Quaid.

Screenwriter Howard Klausner said faith was always an important part of the former president’s life.

“Reagan’s faith was integral from childhood on,” Klausner explained. “It wasn’t just politically expedient. The man believed in the Lord, and that belief guided him throughout his life. To leave that out wouldn’t be true to who he was.”

“There’s a spiritual root that gave him strength all the way through his life and especially called upon him when he was president,” Jon Voight, who also starred in the movie, said.

Dennis Quaid gives a bravura performance in REAGAN as the beloved President, union leader and movie star. He’s just as good during the more intimate scenes as he is in the iconic public scenes. He’s supported by a great cast, including Jon Voight as a KGB analyst who closely follows Reagan’s beliefs and behavior. The movie’s focus on Reagan’s fight against communism gives a strong narrative structure to REAGAN’s stirring story of faith and patriotism.
