Rookie QB Brock Purdy Lifts 49ers to NFC West Title: ‘I Trust In Him’

After the San Francisco 49ers lost their all-star QB Jimmy Garoppolo to a season ending injury, many thought the team’s chances of making the playoffs had ended.

However, rookie quarterback Brock Purdy has proved naysayers wrong, after solidifying their spot atop the NFC West and a top-three seed playoff birth.

Purdy was picked last at the NFL draft last year, but now leads the best team in the west. He recently threw for 217 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions in the Niners’ win against their rivals, the Seattle Seahawk—all while battling through a rib injury from the week prior.

The victory is their seventh straight victory, as they now stand with a 10-4 record.

“It was definitely another level (for him). It was another level for me just watching someone do it [with] the injury he had last week, and for him to be ready to go today,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game. “Still, you could tell in pregame warmups a number of things that were really tough for him, and for him to be able to just play, let alone be able to play the way he did … the team had a lot of respect for him before that game, but a lot more now.”

“He’s definitely the most poised rookie I’ve ever had,” he added.

Despite his success, Purdy deflected the praise to his teammates and the teams previous quarterbacks this season.

“Honestly, I’m just another component — another piece — to this team in terms of a guy coming in and just doing what he’s asked,” he said. “I’m the quarterback. I have to make decisions. I trust in how the coaches teach me throughout the week. I just try to get the ball out to the guys on time.

He added: “And honestly, I don’t think Jimmy [Garoppolo] and Trey [Lance] get enough credit for what they’ve done. I’m just now coming on the scene where these guys have been here. … I want to continue what they got rolling.”

Purdy’s play has set the NFL world abuzz. His steadiness in games, he says, comes from his relationship with the Lord.

“You go out there, you prepare as best you can, you get better every single day at practice, and once you get your opportunity, man, it’s what are you going to do with it?” he said after his unexpected appearance against Miami. “For me, I believe in the Lord, and I trust in Him. I just go out there, and I just play, you know?”

Purdy, who is vocal about God on Twitter and on Instagram, even displayed his faith during Thursday’s game with a wristband on his left arm that referenced the Great Commandment from the Bible passage Matthew 22:37-39: “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Purdy is also outspoken about his faith and often credits God with his success.

“Every time I play — no matter what happens — I want others to see God through my actions,” Brock told Sports Spectrum in 2019. “Every time I step on the field I want to bring Him glory. Even when we lose, I point to God and thank Him for the opportunity. Everything happens for a reason; it’s all a lesson from the Lord. It’s a game, it’s not my life.”

In 2021, he shared part of his testimony: “It was just a great reminder of where my identity is, where it lies. And it’s in Jesus. And I continue to lean on Him. Again, the next day I didn’t go out and throw for 500 yards and was this awesome quarterback, but it was just this peace that I had with Him knowing that, ‘Hey, no matter what I’m going to face moving forward during college football, God and Jesus are going to be my identity. And whatever I face, I won’t be shaken from it.’ I’ve got a great foundation in Him.”
