How Sadie Robertson Huff Helps Her Fans Trust God With ‘The Next Step’

How Sadie Robertson Huff Helps Her Fans Trust God With ‘The Next Step’

Sadie Robertson Huff’s new devotional, The Next Step: 50 Devotions to Find Your Way Forward, draws on scripture to give readers practical advice to grow in their walk with God.

“It’s for people who are maybe starting their walk with Christ and need direction in their new season, or it is for people who have been following Christ for years and just need rest,” Sadie’s husband Christian Huff said on her “Whoa! That’s Good” podcast.

Next Step, the first of the series titled after Sadie’s podcast, focuses each week on one of the Wisdom books of the Bible — Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs — to help readers get in a “rhythm of having a morning devotional time with the Lord,” according to Sadie.

She admits that she wasn’t always a firm believer in the morning devotional.

“I used to be the person…I was like, ‘Man, you don’t have to have a morning devotional,’” she said. “‘That’s not the only way to connect with the Lord. It’s a 24/7 relationship,’ which I still do believe it is a 24/7 relationship.”

“It’s an all-the-time thing, but I 100% can tell a difference in myself and the day if I actually have a morning devotional, as opposed to skipping that and just, you know, having my 15-minute car ride with the Lord. It’s been so beneficial for my life,” she continued.

She credits her friend and mentor Donna Stuart for helping her get into the habit of morning devotionals by texting her every morning at six to remind her to read the Bible.

“She did that for weeks, and it helped me so much. It was such a pivotal time in my life because I actually realized how much came from that,” Huff said. “I mean, Jesus models that. He would get up, you know, before the sun rose, go into the mountainside, be with the Lord, and I feel like you see that so much in scripture.”

The title of her newest book came from a silent prayer when she had a moment of stage fright giving a talk at A&M University.

“Here I am in the middle of a basketball arena surrounded by thousands of college students. I don’t really know what I’m gonna say, and…I just said, ‘God, what do you want me to say? Like, what do you want me to say next?’” Sadie recalled.

From there her talk took on a new direction, one another friend took notice of.

“She came over, and she said, ‘Sadie, like that needs to be your new normal. Do not go back to the old way. Do not go back to over preparing, over planning, trying to memorize, you need to trust the Lord with the next steps in your life, with what he is going to speak,’” the DUCK DYNASTY star said.

As a reminder of that lesson, her friend sent her an oil lamp — a replica of one from biblical times.

“She said, “[L]ook how small this is. It doesn’t light the whole path, it just is going to light your next step,’” the mom-of-two recalled. “She said, ‘Lean into the Lord and trust Him that He will light your next step.’”

“We want God to light up the whole path before we even take the next step. We want to see vision for 10 years… that’s not even how God works. You know, God’s word is a lamp unto your feet,” Huff said. “It’s just your feet like it’ll light your next step, your next path, to give you confident enough to just keep going forward. And so that’s what kind of inspired the book.”

The Louisiana native says that her new book offers practical advice to not only help with one’s spiritual health but also physical — like finding a workout partner or going on a walk.

Sadie also mentioned the 24-hour rule that she picked up from a former roommate where if you have an offense with someone, you have 24 hours to address it or to let it go.

“If it’s really important, give yourself 24 more hours and say it. You know, just putting kind of a timeline to frustration,” Huff said. “And normally, when you deal with it fast, it doesn’t build up to being as big of a thing.”

In the same way her mentor Donna sent her reminders to dive into God’s Word, she invited followers to get reminders to do the same.

“[W]e are doing a little text thread to help people wake up and get in the word! If you want to join text AWAKE to 318-206-5660 and starting tomorrow team LO will send you a Good Morning text to encourage you to get going on your devo for the day for the next 30 days,” the influencer posted on Instagram.

As far as the next step for Sadie, she said she has taken a break from social media to keep her free from distraction, letting her team handle her social media accounts.

“I just read, finished a lot of books that year, and all those things. And it was…so good for me,” she said of her last social media fast.

Sadie has previously spoken about how social media has made more people anxious.

“You know, being on social media every day, getting the news app on your phone, you see the weight of the world, and so that’s a heavy burden to carry that I don’t think anyone was meant to carry,” she told Crosswalk.

She reminded listeners that people have control over their social media, and as believers, we have a responsibility to use it in a Godly way.

“The beauty of it, it’s your page. You get to  decide  what you post, you decide what you look at, and so I think you have to take ownership and say okay, ‘I’m gonna follow the people who lead me to Christ and I’m going to post the things that lead others to Christ as well,’” Huff added.
