Worship Artist’s New Album Reminds Us Why We Need ‘Basic Faith’

Worship artist Sean Curran, who has sung with Kari Jobe, Crowder and Cody Carnes, recently released his album “Basic Faith,” which is all about helping others in their walk with Christ.

“I pick the word ‘basic’ because to me it’s akin to something like fundamental or foundational, which is different than simple, you know?” the artist said on Joshua Swanson’s podcast. “The last thing I would suggest is that faith is easy…Faith takes real work, and real faith takes a lifetime, and it is where all the good stuff is.”

“I have come to see that there are certainly a great many things that and a great many ways that I’ve grown, you know, in wisdom and spirit and truth and hopefully a little maturity along the way,” he continued. “But I think if I’m honest, I can see that there are also a great many things that I’ve overcomplicated and that I’ve developed a tendency to with certain parts of my life to maybe reach out and grab them, you know, as if they’re better in my hands than in the Lord’s, and so much of the inspiration of these songs is to create those open paths again in my spirit where I surrender those things.”

Curran created the album over the course of two years to help others sort through their thoughts and challenges as they try to grow in Christ.

He shared on social media:

These songs have helped me through some of the most challenging years of my life and I shouldn’t be surprised because that’s what songs are best at… helping you through. Well, they are yours now. Take them with you. Sing them often. Stay hopeful. Stay curious. Find meaning. Make meaning.

Are we truly alive? I think that question matters. I am certain I have been fed every prescription imaginable for the question of what happens when we die. These songs are whispering a different question… what happens when we live? This is basic faith.

Some of the lyrics from the album’s title track song are:

I’m getting back to the basics

Don’t need a clever way to say i

No more flashy ways of praying

A simple yes and honest amen

I surrender all the ways

I complicate

This common grace

Reignite that holy flame

The purest praise

Is a basic faith

The songs are Curran’s prayer of surrendering his life to God.

“All of these things belong to the Lord, and they’re better in the Lord’s hands, and my whole life belongs on the altar, and whatever may come, that’s where I belong,” Curran explained. “That’s where my posture should reside… A lot of these songs are…trying to just sift through that experience, you know?”

“Maybe it’s really worth us taking the time to sift through as God’s people what our lives are amounting to. Is our music helping us to become kingdom carriers, right?…That’s really important to me, and I hope to be contributing songs that do that, that help us to bear the image of God.”
