Christian mixed-media artist and poet Morgan Harper Nichols used to share a lot about her faith and her own written devotionals online — until they got in the way of her own time with God.

“I stopped sharing from my personal devotionals because it got in the way of my own time with God…I was thinking about how people online would respond to personal prayers,” she said. “It didn’t feel right.”

“I started making art and slowly but surely, poetry found its way onto the canvas. Words that felt God-breathed and I felt wrapped in Christ’s love as I created,” said Nichols, who is the sister of singer Jamie Grace.

A lot of people have asked the “Storyteller” singer to keep posting, but she knows it’s not the way she wants to share anymore.

“You are going to continue to change and grow and what you share online, who you share it with, if you share at all is going to change, too,” Nichols said. “You are not the sum of what you’ve shared online.”

Many people may find themselves in the same position as Nichols.

“A chapter of your life became an internet search term, and now you’re wondering what to do?” she said. “Perhaps, there are no easy answers for this and we will have to figure it out as we go, but what I do know is this: it matters that we extend grace to ourselves and others who are learning to create boundaries around what they share online, if they share at all. Whether search terms and social media pages come ago, what matters is that we each know who we are beyond them.”

Nichols told Parents that she incorporates grace into her art and conversations with others.

“I say we have to give grace for ourselves to try to find more things that bring us joy because that hasn’t been something that we’ve been given, historically,” she said of her black American heritage. “We have to create more room to care for ourselves and care for each other and create more joy, peace and love and support. And a lot of that comes through grace, giving grace to ourselves, even if other people aren’t giving it to you.”

Nichols has authored many books — most recently “You Are Just Beginning,” an illustrated book of poetry about giving yourself courage and grace in your journey. It’s available on Amazon and other online sellers.
