Pro surfer and shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton recently reflected on losing her arm and God’s goodness through it.
“It’s terrible. A 13-year-old hard-charging, happy-go-lucky girl lost her arm, but then God took it and turned it into something really beautiful,” she explained on Madison Prewett Troutt’s “Stay True” podcast. “Maybe for some people though, like through really tough things. They don’t necessarily see the beautiful thing that came out of it.”
We don’t have answers to everything, and we aren’t always given the knowledge of how a bad thing benefitted us or others.
“Part of faith is trusting in the unseen,” Hamilton said. “Trusting that God has a plan even in the like most horrific things. The Lord is always wanting good for us.”

“These bad things that happen are literally like my call to rely on the Lord to be my strength and it’s in our weakness that he is strong,” she said.
When Hamilton lost her arm at 13, she drew strength from God and learned to surf again competitively. She’s inspired many people like her and has impacted thousands through her story.
Movieguide® highly rated a movie about Hamilton called SOUL SURFER, giving it a Teddy Bear Award®. Part of the review reads, “SOUL SURFER has very poignant moments that will bring tears to your eyes. It has one of those endings that make the movie work, despite some light weight scenes. Anna Sophia Robb as Bethany gives a wonderful performance.”
“A cast of veterans provides great support. The good news is that real courage comes from deep faith in Jesus Christ, not just willpower. There are powerful church scenes, but they shouldn’t alienate secular viewers because they are extremely real. Bravo!”
Last year, Hamilton said, “When I see this younger version of me, I’m reminded of how little I understood what God was about to do. What felt like loss, He turned into purpose.”
“What felt impossible, He made possible,” she said of God in her life. “Every step of my story, even the hardest ones, has been held by His goodness and grace. He truly does make beauty from ashes. 💛” She also shared a Bible verse from exodus, and shared a photo of her younger self.
She always wanted her life to reflect back to God. She just never knew what that would like before her accident.
Now she says, “God’s greater plan for me was more than I ever imagined ❤️”
Hamilton is living testimony of how God can turn the toughest situations into something good.
