The Artistic Achievement of SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE
By Dr. Ted Baehr, Publisher
SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE is an amazing movie that’s both entertaining and artistically fabulous. You can read the MOVIEGUIDE® review for its entertainment quality, but seeing a special awards screening reminded me and MOVIEGUIDE®’s Director of Videography, Jeremy Carroll, how almost every scene in the movie is tremendous art, with references to great artists such as Chagall, Picasso and many others and references to great comic book art as well as very funny inclusions of different artistic and mythic elements.
When the movie was released, the news came out that different theaters were carrying slightly different versions. At the awards screening, I was able to talk for a long time with Producer and Co-Writer Phil Lord. Phil has produced, directed and written many MOVIEGUIDE® Award Winners, such as THE LEGO MOVIE, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE and CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS. Like my father (a great movie and Broadway star under the stage name of Robert Allen), myself and one of my sons (Jim), Phil is a Dartmouth graduate. His uncle, Carter, took my Hollywood filmmaking class and eventually became a strong Christian.
Phil said when they released the movie, they still had some elements of the CGI animation in process. So, the various versions were only due to the fact that it was still in production. However, I mistakenly thought it was a good marketing tool to get people to see the movie several times at different theaters.
The award version where we talked, Phil said, is the final one, and MOVIEGUIDE®’s conclusion is that SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE is one of the great movies of all time.
