In a new interview with TODAY discussing his new book, Shot Ready, Stephen Curry revealed what became his superpower growing up.

“The blessing of being in a basketball family and having a dad who played in the NBA, yeah, I had access to a gym, I had equipment, I had all the opportunities in that respect, but it didn’t actually match up with my journey through the ranks,” Curry told TODAY.com. “I was the last kid on my 9- and 10-year-old team, and I was the smallest kid on pretty much every team I played on until I got to college.”

“I developed a work ethic through just understanding that I love to play the game, I had fun playing, and it was my journey, not my dad’s journey,” he added. “I also had plenty of criticism and a lack of opportunity in terms of playing, that really just drove me to stick to the grind. My work ethic became a superpower in a sense because it was the one thing I could rely on.”

His new book explores the power of mindset and a strong work ethic more.

Shot Ready is a powerful distillation of Stephen Curry’s transformative philosophy of success — centered on preparation, constant improvement, creativity, connection, mindfulness, and joy — delivered in his incomparable voice and style. Stunningly designed and illustrated with more than 100 gorgeous photographs, Shot Ready is an intimate narrative and a practical blueprint for any reader who wants to unlock their own potential,” a synopsis of the book reads.

Curry also shared on Instagram last week, “It’s finally here. 📚🔥. “SHOT READY, my new book, is officially out now. More than a story about basketball, it’s a story about belief, resilience, and doing the work when no one’s watching. For every young dreamer who’s ever been underestimated: this one’s for you.”

When speaking with TODAY, Curry shared advice for anyone who struggles to find joy in their daily life.

“I think that’s just an intentional choice,” the athlete said. “One, reminding yourself it’s a privilege of what you’re getting to do. I had those moments and I had to learn that. Everything feels hard. ‘Oh, I got to wake up early, oh, I got homework,’ this and that.

“Remind yourself the privilege that you have to be able to play a sport, take a class, work on a vocation, whatever it is you’re doing,” he added. “For me, the process is the most fun. The results, the wins and losses and all that type of stuff, keep you going, but the process and what you dive into on a daily basis and the nuances of mastering what you’re doing, there’s definitely points of feedback that make you smile: ‘I’ll be better at this than I was a week ago.’ Try to find those moments.”

What a great reminder to work hard and find joy in what we do each day.
