Teen’s Pro-Life Song ‘I Was Gonna Be’ Tops iTunes Charts

The songwriter behind Rachel Holt’s pro-life song “I Was Gonna Be” says the song was “something [that] had to be said.”
Chris Wallin, who has worked with country stars like Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney and Toby Keith, says he is “humbled” by the response to “I Was Gonna Be.” The song recently cracked iTunes’ Top 10.
“When I first started writing this song I didn’t think anyone would ever actually sing it,” he explained. “I wrote it because I thought something had to be said.”
In another interview, Wallin explained how Holt came to sing the song.
“‘I’m singing that song,’” he recalled the 18-year-old saying. “‘I think a lot of the songs that girls my age listen to never talk about real life. And that’s what I want to do.’”
The lyrics read:
Some don’t believe I’m a living soul
Just a bad mistake that needs to go
If my mama coulda just seen my face
Maybe she woulda had me anyway
And there are those who speak for me
Who fight for lives that they can’t see
But there are some who only mourn
This life of mine if I were born
All I wanted was a chance
To learn to love and laugh and dance
Oh but I was gone before I arrived
Sent back to Heaven on a starlight flight
Yeah I was gonna change the world
And I was gonna be a girl
Movieguide® previously reported on growing pro-life support among Gen Zers:
A recent poll conducted by Students for Life of America broke down how Millennials and Gen Z-ers feel about abortion.
“As an organization of mostly Millennials and Gen Z, we’ve been frustrated by all the sweeping statements made about our views on the human rights issue of the day. And as the age range most targeted for abortion, the views of Millennials an Gen Z on an industry that has ended the lives of one-quarter of our generation are extremely relevant,” said Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins.
“Far from embracing Planned Parenthood and the Democratic Party Line,” Hawkins continued. “Millennials and Gen Z have a more nuanced view of abortion that embraces a number of pro-life positions: Limits on abortion and taxpayer funding were supported, Reversing Roe was acceptable; and Voting on abortion policy embraced.”
Some of the poll’s key findings were:
-
- Almost 7 out of 10 Millennials and Gen Z want to vote on abortion-related policy.
- Less than 2 out of 10 want unlimited abortion through all 9 months, for any reason at all and sometimes with taxpayer funding, which Roe allows.
- 6 in 10 believe schools should protect students’ free speech rights.
- Almost HALF supported banning abortion after a heartbeat detected.
