THE LORD OF THE RINGS’ Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd Announce New Podcast

By Movieguide® Staff

Actors of THE LORD OF THE RINGS fame, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, announced a new podcast about their adventures playing the hobbits Merry and Pippin.

The podcast, which they have titled “The Friendship Onion,” will premiere on May 18 with Kast Media Producing.

“Join your favorite Hobbits, friends and co-stars, Billy Boyd and Dom Monaghan as they take a look back at their time on The Lord of the Rings. Featuring interviews with cast and crew, diving deep into life behind the scenes, and answering the many fan questions, The Friendship Onion will peel back the layers of their friendship, both on screen and off,” an announcement on the Podcast’s YouTube read.

Each new episode of the podcast will be available weekly on all podcast platforms.

Monaghan and Boyd were fan favorites from the original LOTR trilogy based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. The podcast will follow a similar style as other movie and TV-based podcasts like “The West Wing Weekly” and the “Office Ladies.”

“I am contractually obliged to make a glowing comment here in regards to the podcast Billy and I are making together. This is proving difficult as Billy has abducted me and is holding me for ransom to the price of 44 bananas. Please, send bananas,” Monaghan said.

“Dom took a little persuading, it’s true, but this podcast is going to rock. He is such a joker, you have to love Dom. Ha….but you also have to love bananas, so….yes, send bananas,” Boyd added.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring the comedic genius of this duo to podcasting. Fans were introduced to the quick wit and fun banter of this pairing through The Lord of the Rings films, but this podcast will demonstrate how far beyond that origins story their boundless energy and interest stretches. We can’t wait to start peeling back the layers of this friendship onion,” Colin Thomson, CEO of Kast Media, said of the duo.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy has been nominated for many a Movieguide® Award. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING won the award for Best Film for Mature Audiences in 2001. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS was selected as one of the Best Movies for Mature Audiences in 2002. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING won the Teddy Bear Award for Best Film for Mature Audiences in 2003.

Monaghan also attended the Movieguide® Awards as a presenter in 2002.
