How This Scene Impacted THE CHOSEN Characters: ‘Watershed Moment’
By Movieguide® Contributor
THE CHOSEN cast and crew reflected on how the creative liberties they took with a specific Season 3 scene impacted their characters.
In the scene, Jesus pairs up the disciples, two by two, to preach and heal.
Jenkins wrote, “A very strange passage in the gospels fostered this scene from Season Three. The disciples were sent out two by two to do the same things Jesus was doing; casting out demons, healing, and preaching with authority.”
“And then it’s clear that authority/ability didn’t continue during Jesus’ ministry,” he continued. “So as we like to do, we explored in depth how the disciples would react on a human level. How would you react?”
Because the Bible doesn’t say who Jesus paired with whom, THE CHOSEN writers took some creative liberties.
“We bring to life what, in the Bible, is a brief anecdote,” writer Tyler Thomas said. “That He sent them out two by two. That is a writer’s delight. The fewer the details on something like that, the more fun for us. So we got to imagine who’s getting paired up.”
“A tax collector [Matthew] and person whose former job it was to murder tax collectors [Simon Z]. Who would have thought that, but it’s like perfect,” he added.
“[It] kind of shows how even we can work together with people that we don’t get along with or we don’t see eye to eye with,” Paras Patel, who plays Matthew, said of the pairing.
“I think what we’re really excited to see is the disciples taking all that they’ve learned up to that point and then applying it,” Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, explained. “They can teach, they can heal, they can cast out demons. Stuff they’ve never done before. They’ve only seen Him do it. It’s a watershed moment for them and it’s also scary.”
Season 3 of THE CHOSEN is out on the Angel Studios app, as well as Netflix, VUDU, Sling TV and other platforms.
Season 4 will arrive in theaters on Feb. 1 with episodes 1-3. Episodes 4-6 will hit the big screen on Feb. 15, and episodes 7-8 will release Feb. 29.
Moveiguide® previously reported on THE CHOSEN:
“For the first time ever, the full season of a streaming-TV show will be released exclusively in theaters, distributed by Fathom Events,” a press release about the show stated.
Fans of THE CHOSEN were able to view the premiere and finale of Season 3 in theaters.
“Every time we’ve dipped our toes in the theatrical waters, viewers have overwhelmingly told us they want more,” creator and director Dallas Jenkins explained in the statement. “After seeing the Season 4 episodes, we knew we’d be doing our fans a disservice if we denied them the chance to see them all on a big screen with others they can laugh and cry with.”
Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Events, added, “We are thrilled to collaborate again with THE CHOSEN team to bring fans the entire fourth season to cinemas before it is available elsewhere. It is a testament to the big screen’s power to unite people and have them share in this communal experience.”
Season 4 will start showing in theaters February 1, with a two-week run of the first three episodes. Episodes 4-6 will show for two weeks starting February 15, and the season’s last two episodes will be released February 29.
