Tim Allen is officially returning to the world of TV!

“ABC has greenlit the multi-camera comedy SHIFTING GEARS starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings,” according to Variety.

SHIFTING GEARS marks Allen’s return to ABC. The actor previously starred in the network’s HOME IMPROVEMENT and LAST MAN STANDING. His role in the latter earned him a Teddy Bear Award® and a Grace Award® nomination.

A description of SHIFTING GEARS reads, “Matt, a headstrong widower, is the owner of a classic car workshop. When his separated daughter [Riley] and teenage children arrive at his house, the real restoration begins.”

There are a few behind-the-scenes changes as the show’s production gets underway.

Froy Gutierrez, who has previously appeared in THE GOLDBERGS and TEEN WOLF, was originally cast in the role of Nick, Riley’s younger brother. The role will now be recast as SHIFTING GEARS goes to series.

SHIFTING GEARS will also have a new showrunner. Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, who wrote and ran the pilot, have exited the show.

“Sources say their departure was amicable and they will be credited as executive producers on the pilot,” MSN reported. “They also remain in business with SHIFTING GEARS producer 20th Television. A new showrunner will be named soon.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Allen’s excitement to return to TV:

Tim Allen is thankful to be working with ABC on a third primetime sitcom as he looks to make his upcoming show, SHIFTING GEARS, his best showing yet.

“I am very excited,” Allen told Entertainment Tonight in March. “You know, I tried really hard with HOME IMPROVEMENT and LAST MAN STANDING; maybe three’s a charm, maybe I can finally make a statement with this.”

“It was a big event for me [when the pilot was ordered] because I really loved HOME IMPROVEMENT, to do LAST MAN STANDING was a big push, I loved that family so much. And then ABC said, ‘If you come up with an idea’ and I said, ‘If I did it, it would be this.’ And we came up with this idea and we’re getting there. I’m very geeked to be given this opportunity.”
