TODAY Anchor Willie Geist Asks for His Kids’ Input Before Celebrities Interviews

Willie Geist, a morning show anchor with TODAY, opened up with PEOPLE’s Angela Andaloro about how he does a “gut check” with his kids before interviews. The father of two just did his 300^th interview on SUNDAY TODAY WITH WILLIE GEIST.

“I was very honored to be number 300. I’ll be back. I’ll be number 400, or 500, or 600, but I’d like to keep it on that century mark if we can,” Damon joked.

For Geist, Damon is well-known, but Geist doesn’t immediately recognize some of his subjects due to his age.

“I’m definitely pushing 50 at this point, so when somebody who is on the younger end of celebrities come in, I do a gut check with my kids,” Geist confessed.

“I can tell when [my daughter’s] enthusiasm is real and when it’s just her being nice to me,” Geist continued.

Geist’s TODAY co-anchor Hoda Kotb got a laugh out of her audience when she told a story about Geist’s initial reaction to Harry Style’s visit. Kotb explained, “Willie’s like, ‘Oh my,’ my daughter’s going to kill me. She’s not here. She’s going to be so upset,’ and I go, ‘Oh, don’t worry.’”

Kotb asked Harry to record a video saying, “I love you, Lily.” But she made one critical mistake—Geist’s daughter’s name is Lucie!

Geist previously told The Local Moms Network that his son George “put on his full tux for rocking out to One Direction” when the TODAY show featured the band. Though when it came time to meet Dwayne Johnson, George “clammed up.”

Geist said, “He’s like, ‘I don’t know what to say. No, I can’t. I can’t go.’ And he got all nervous.”
