TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie Calls Book About Faith ‘Vulnerable’

By Movieguide® Contributor

TODAY host Savannah Guthrie opened up about how releasing her new book about faith was a “vulnerable” experience for her.

“I was surprised too,” Guthrie said on Kara Swisher’s podcast. “But you know, honestly, my faith has been important to me. Always has been.”

Her book, “Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere,” released earlier this year.

“And all my close friends and my colleagues [and] everyone knows that,” she continued. “So, I don’t mean that they would be surprised but more that I was surprised that it was something I wanted to write about or put out there publicly, not because I was ashamed but because it’s so personal. It’s so vulnerable.”

Guthrie explained that vulnerability is part of the process of writing a book.

“I mean, if you’re going to write a book about faith–and it is in any way authentic–then you’re more or less putting your heart out there,” she said. “And in this world, which I don’t have to remind you, that’s really terrifying.”

“So, for me to put it out there like that, I’m certainly not holding myself up as any kind of model of behavior or anything,” she added. “I’m not any kind of theologian or biblical scholar. It’s just reflections from a real person, a real life. More learning, more setbacks at any time.”

Guthrie shared her hope for the book a few weeks ago with Drew Barrymore.

“My big message of the book is to come as you are. Come with your doubt. God is not asking for stoic, perfect people and some pious presentation that’s phony,” she explained. “I think we’re asked to bring our doubts, our despair, bring our whole selves, but just come.”

In “Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere,” Guthrie shares “personal stories from her own joys and sorrows as a daughter, mother, wife, friend, and professional journalist, the award-winning TODAY show coanchor and New York Times bestselling author explores the place of faith in everyday life.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Guthrie’s book:

THE TODAY SHOW host Savannah Guthrie announced that she has been working on a new faith-based book, “Mostly What God Does.”

“I’m so passionate about faith, how it can challenge us and inspire us, and it is at the heart of a new project that I am excited to reveal right now,” Guthrie said. “I’ve decided to share a book. It’s called ‘Mostly What God Does’ because mostly what God does is love you.”

“It’s just a bunch of reflections on faith and love and kindness and goodness,” she added. “It’s very personal, which is why I’m in tears about is, but also really overjoyed and delighted, but scared because it’s certainly the most personal and vulnerable thing I’ve ever done. But also a joy because I’m really passionate about this, and I hope it will be full of love and happiness for everyone.”
